Firefighters gather at Nardillo's Funeral Home before lining up two-by-two to offer their condolences to the family of Fire Department Lt. James Pagano.

CRANSTON -- They began lining up around 3 this afternoon outside the funeral home to say goodbye to slain Cranston firefighter Lt. James A. Pagano -- firefighters in dress blues and white gloves and solemn faces, friends and family.

Firefighters from Cranston, Providence, Bristol, Coventry and elsewhere have come to pay respects at the wake for Pagano, who the police allege was shot and killed Sunday by next-door neighbor Nicholas Gianquitti, 40. Gianquitti, a former Providence police officer, is now charged with murder.

Pagano "was a great guy, the ultimate family guy," said James Moore, who retired as a Cranston deputy fire chief in 2002 and worked with Pagano at Station 3 for several years.

At first there were two lines to get into Nardolillo Funeral Home, with firefighters in one and friends and family in another. Shortly before 5 p.m., about 100 people were waiting to go inside.

The full Cranston command staff and the chief are inside with Pagano's family.

An American flag flew at half-staff.

His funeral will be held tomorrow, starting from the funeral home at 8:45 a.m. More about the services and an online guestbook.

From The Journal: More about Pagano and the shooting.

Nicholas Gianquitti, 40; "disabled" Providence police officer can't get his own life together after the horrific work related accident of falling off a chair, so he takes his frustrations out on the local kids and then shoots and kills the man that sticks up for them. A waste of skin and bones in my humble opinion. Too bad he has to reside at the ACI on our nickel, I would spring for the injection in a heartbeat.

I am very sorry for your loss. I lost my husband suddenly and I know it is a very painful, hard to imagine experience. My prayers are with you and your family. God Bless the children.

It amazes me that someone thinks they have the right to pull a gun on someone. Where does one get the nerve? Now just for a ball hitting a car (something that can be replaced), a husband, son, father, and friend's life (which can't be replaced) has been taken by someone who used to be a police officer. Crazy. My heart goes out to all of Mr. Pagano's family. God Bless.

May God Bless ,James Paganos' soul as he enters in his second and eternal life. Also is it necessary to place the phrase Once a Providence Police officer in every realated article. That murdering bum was no PROVIDENCE POLICE OFFICER. IF he had been ,he wouldn't have settled for a 2/3 ' pension over a bogus knee injury, after only playing the role of a PPD Officer for several months. He obviously had no Heart and not to mention this was some seventeen years ago. So to the family of James Pagano, The Providence Police officers walked by your lost loved one last eve with sorrow and Heart. May god be with you in this time of need...
