Cranston man accused of stealing church offerings

A Cranston man who counted church offerings has been charged with embezzling cash collected from parishioners during the weekly offerings at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cranston.

State police detectives on Sunday arrested Vittorio "Victor" Castriotta, 48, of 66 Woodmont Drive, charging him with felony embezzlement and larceny over $500, according to a police news release today.

Castriotta has been for the last five years a volunteer counter at the church at 237 Garden Hills Drive, and the police said they believe money was taken during at least the last five months.

The state police allege their investigation found Castriotta, who was a member of a volunteer counting team that counted funds every four weeks, stole cash collected as part of the regular parishioner offerings.

Church officials found that collections dropped when Castriotta was involved in counting offerings, police said, and the officials decided to review their video system.

The amount of money the police say was stolen has not been figured, "however, it is believed to be in an amount warranting a felony charge." The police probe will continue to figure out the amount they say was taken.

The police said there is no evidence suggesting Castriotta worked with any other volunteer or church employee in allegedly taking money.

Castriotta was released on $10,000 personal recognizance. A July 29 pre-arraignment conference is slated in Providence County Superior Court.

All I can say is that he had to be totally desperate or his concience is non-existant.
How sad either way.

it takes a severely troubled man to steal from a church. he had to have been in extremely desperate times and he simply lost his way. he is not a bad person. just misled

How sad that the church felt it needed to set up a scam with the FBI, rather than to just tell him they KNOW it's him, in private, along with proof. Find out why, offer a payback solution with interest, and then set up an apology for him, with an explanation to the parrish. Afterwards therapy. But to publicly humiliate a man, as he leaves church with his family and friends, leaves a lot to be desired. Are we sure that THIS is the "Christian way"?

Let's Pray for him as God would want us to. We don't know his circumstances; so let's not judge. We are all under serious pressure with this horrible economy.

I have known Victor for many years, and I would have NEVER in a MILLION years expected this of him. He is a wonderful person. I do not know why he did this, but I do know that he HAD to have had some extenuating circumstances. My thoughts and prayers are with him.

While theft cannot be defended, human imperfection can be defended ... the only perfect human to ever walk this earth was Jesus himself. Rather than setup a "state police sting" operation - wouldn't it have been wonderful to truly exercise christian compassion if the pastor had gone to this parishioner and told him that he knew what had been happening; then a good confession giving the parishioner a chance to clear his soul - and state the reason that would have made him take such drastic action. After paying restitution to the church, the next words from the pastor to the parishioner should be, "how can I help you." HOw quick these so-called Christians are to cast stones, condemn and judge. Last I knew, that is not Christian doctrine ... that is certainly NOT what Jesus would do. We are supposed to be so forgiving of the misdeads committed by Catholic Priests ... yet, it seems some of them, waste no time in throwing the first stone. I pray for him and his family and I am ashamed of the actions taken by the pastor of this church. KATHY L.

FIVE YEARS FIVE YEARS. Little Victor gave his time to the Church for five years & yet when the church suspected this was happening they couldn't take him aside & question him themselves? Schedule restitution? Christians they call themselves, I don't feel it? Obviously something is very wrong to cause Victor to do this, even though in my heart I don't believe it. Why couldn't these "men of the cloth" talk to him & try to help him like Jesus Christ would have done? He needed help & the Catholic Church turned their back on him. I don't understand. It sickens me how quickly the Church, where he is a known & respected parishoner, threw him under the bus. Jesus would not have done this so the men that claim they are the teachers of the Lords word shouldn't have done this either. Priests are supposed to be instruments of the Lord but they did not act in the manner He would have. The Catholic Church buries the fact that priests are molesting children & relocate them like it never happened, yet they call in the state police to launch an investigation because they SUSPECT a parishoner is taking money. God forgive them for drawing the whip on Victor. My prayers & love are with you little Victor.
