Woonsocket man accused of abducting girl, 11

WOONSOCKET -- A Woonsocket man accused of abducting an 11-year-old girl at knifepoint and assaulting her in a nearby apartment this morning is in custody.

Miguel Navarro will face charges in connection with the incident, the police said at an afternoon news conference.

The girl was walking to school on Willow Street at about 7:40 a.m. when, the police allege, Navarro, brandishing a knife, took her to a nearby abandoned apartment, acting Police Chief Eric Croce said.

Croce said she managed to escape after about 30 minutes when he walked away from her. She ran home and told her mother, who called the police.

The police fanned out in the area, talked to people, got information and found the suspect in a nearby Willow Street apartment.

The police are investigating whether the alleged abduction is connected to a recent abduction attempt involving someone else.
