Update: Delivery man dies in freak fall at J&W building
PROVIDENCE -- A delivery man died today after he suffered severe head injuries in a fall in a building on the Johnson & Wales University downtown campus, according to state and city officials.
The victim, whose identity was not immediately available, was delivering paint to the former Watkins Building, which is under reconstruction, at 274 Pine St., late in the morning, according to Fire Department officers.
The delivery man was walking up a stairwell, said acting Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Paul Thomas, when he made a wrong move and fell about 20 feet.
“It’s an unusual twist on an industrial accident,” Thomas said, because the victim was not one of the construction workers.
The victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he died, according to fire officers and the state medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
Asked for details about what happened, Lisa Pelosi, spokeswoman for Johnson & Wales, referred questions to the police. A police report was not immediately available.
