Central Falls Police Sgt. Wayne Solan carries a shotgun at the main entrance of Central Falls High School this afternoon as fear of repercussion from a fatal shooting leads to early dismissal of students under the eye of police.

CENTRAL FALLS -- Parents poured in and out of Central Falls High School today to take their children home early following rumors there could be a retaliatory shooting prompted by the deadly shooting last night of a 16-year-old boy.

The 16-year-old, who was a student at Central Falls High School, and a 19-year-old were killed in separate shootings this weekend. The Central Falls police have said the shootings may be related.

At a news conference this afternoon, the police said the 16-year-old boy was found with multiple gunshot wounds at about 11:25 last night near the corner of Dexter and Darling Streets.
The 16-year-old's name has not been released, and the police say they do not have a suspect.

In the high school's entrance/foyer by about 12:45 p.m., parents were picking up students early -- some parents said they had gotten phone calls from their children about a rumored possible retaliation shooting today when school was scheduled to let out.

The police are working with the school district to notify parents and to emphasize a message to parents: Check on your children; know whom they're hanging out with, and be vigilant.

In the other fatal shooting, 19-year-old Anthony Strobert was charged with murder yesterday after a Saturday shooting in which he and the victim, Helder Tomar, 19, of Pawtucket, are believed to have shot at each other.

I'm sorry but as a lifelong resident of the city. This is a disgrace. I'm totally embarrassed to say i live in the city. My question is what are the police doing to try to make this city a better place to live?? Who wants to raise children in a city where parents can not let their kids play outside worried about stray bullets!!

What a shame!!

What is the mayor and the police dept. doing to make this city a safer place?? NOTHING!! What a tragedy. Children can not even be safe playing outside anymore. Is this LA?? Or Rhode Island.

Signed: worried TAXPAYER and mother

It's sad to see young people being killed but also parents or relatives need to be more responsible and should try to keep their sons and daughters away from bad company. Because when something happens like this is easy to say my son, daughter or relative was not the type of person to get in trouble, they were just not that kind of people. Also more police needs to be present on the streets is a small city and the police should keep the community informed better.

i have lived in this city all my life in the same house. i must say central falls has progressively gone down hill, from the littering, abandoned houses, drugs and violence, to the disrespectful ways of kids. its no surprise how these kids ae acting, the "adults" are no better. i hear women and men screaming and fighting daily in the streets while theyre children look on. set an example!
when i was a child we were able to play man hunt, kick the can and stay out after dark without worry. the neighbors wouldnt curse us out or attack us if our ball went into their yard and we went to retrieve it.
now...i cant even let my son play in my own fenced in backyard.and it seems the police just look the other way.

i wish officer john was still active on the force. now he was a true crime fighter.

SHAME ON YOU MONSTERS.
PARENTS TAKE RESPONSIBILITY.

That's one of the reasons why I left CF right after graduated from the Worrior in 1995. I am now living in Northern California and ashamed about the news.

former CF resident | April 28, 2008 7:30 PM link

I dont know what the hell is going on in CF but when I was in school a fue years ago there was violence but nothing like this..the police should stop worrying about capturing imigrants and stoping people over just to ask if they're legal or not and star doing something about the safety of the kids..my niece is about to begin school next year and if things keep going the way they are there's no way we're putting her up in a CF school...I say get rid of the oficers on now and hire ones who will protect and serve not discriminate just so they can achive they're parking ticket goals

I went to CFHS class of "89" and we had fights but this. Its truly a sad day when you have police posted outside a school with shotguns!

I live in Cranston and I don't feel safe. I am a single parent and am struggling because I know my children can't attend public schools here. The teachers don't want to teach these children and the school are a war zone. If there isn't a shooting, then a fight. I had to send my oldest to his Fathers out of state because of the schools are so horrible. It tell you something if you need to have an armed policeman walk the halls of the Junior High and your children are afraid to go to school or they will be jumped by half a dozen kids. The principal tells you it's not his problem that the bikes get stolen day after day from in front of the school. If kids will steal a bike that is chain to a rack in front of the school with an armed policeman inside; then those same kids will shoot another, stab another, beat another child or worse - put a bomb in your school. The MAyor hasn't even addressed the issue - hasn't even tried. Why should he - his kids don't go to a school like that. God knows my tax dollars are going somewhere; far be it for me to know where.

Rebekah | April 28, 2008 8:41 PM link

It took you a lifetime to be embarrassed of that city.

TC | April 28, 2008 9:02 PM link

Why is everyone asking the police to fix this problem? It begins with the parents. How much violent TV does your child watch? Did he or she grow up playing violent video games? How many talks have you had with your child about violence and gangs? When you child is caught doing something wrong do you get mad at the school or the police for bringing this to your attention? How much violent TV do you watch? What kind of role model are you to your children. The questions could go on and on. It is so easy to blame the school or the police. Let's start with ourselves first.

pat | April 28, 2008 9:13 PM link

Everyone says more police more security etc... Who is going to pay for that? I say where are the parents, teachers, coaches and clergy who are supposed to be role models to these children. In a world where pop culture encourages and glamorises drug dealing murder and mayhem, it is no surprise and should be of no surprise that these "gang bangers" did what they did. I have no pity what so ever and maybe now parents will finally wake up and play more of a constructive role in their childrens lives. Lets not forget though that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

What is going on in The City of Central Falls? In a city that is one square mile you would think things like this wouldn't happen. Two fatal shootings in the same week. Not to mention the shooting at Broad & Clay Streets, and on Dexter Street where someone riding a bicycle was the target.
It's like The Wild West. When I was going to school back in the 60's and 70's all you had to worry about was getting beat up by the school bully. Now, you have to worry about getting shot.
These thugs need to be found and put behind bars for a very long time.

Ron | April 28, 2008 10:32 PM link

Upsetting how ghetto Central Falls has become. I am sad at hearing the news. WHERE DID THE GUNS COME FROM?! Central Falls was NEVER this bad, it was a safe and great place to goto school. Now, looking back, it makes me glad I left. I feel pain because I am very much still a part of Central Falls, my family history is there, born and raised CF Warriors.

This needs to end, and it needs to end soon. Where are the grief counselors for the students? Where is the support network? What is the community doing? We're not Cumberland, Lincoln, or any other white rich school. No, we're Central Falls, the ghetto, where the poor minorities are left to fend for themselves.

Class of 1999 Alumni | April 28, 2008 11:43 PM link

My heart aches for the parents of these boys. No parent should have to bury there child. It is now time for the police, parents, and teachers to send a message to our children. Our kids are not looking past tomorrow. Ask your teenager what they think they will be doing in 5, 10, 15 years. I have asked this to several the past few days including my own and some that were complete strangers to me. They basically answered the same "they don't know if they'll even be around next month." That scared me and all I could do is cry. We as parents, teachers, police have to get through to these kids that they can have a future. Try asking a teen that question and see the answer you get. It will shock you.

paula | April 28, 2008 11:56 PM link

Don't blame the police for not making it safe for your children, blame the parents who don't control where there kids are and with who they are hanging out with. That's where it all begins. Dig in and get yourselves dirty, don't push the responsibility on a third party! Responsibility begins at home.

As a recent graduate from central falls high school, and a current resident of central falls i am very saddened and worried about my community. though i did not know any of the parties involved in the incidents that have occured over the past week or so...i am very saddened and send my condolences to the families...things like this should never happen, are we all too blind to see results of our actions????? i just hope that soon, we as not only a city, nor as a state, but as a country, that life is a beautiful thing, and there is no need for violence like this...parents stop blaming the police and the mayor, take control of your kids and you raise them the right way...i just hope that this violence ends soon, my family, my friends, and others whom i care about live in this city, and i hope it stays that way...

Me and my family lived in central falls last year but we moved to pawtucket to be safer... now pawtucket and central falls are against eachother?! I think somebody needs to do something about this! Its not just the adults worrying about their children, its also the actual children themselves! There is no need for violence happening in the middle schools, they are full of 12 and 13 year olds! somebody needs to do something!
