Diocese on immigration order: Carcieri not 'uncaring'

The Diocese of Providence has weighed on Governor Carcieri's controversial executive order on illegal immigration.

A statement issued by the diocese says that Bishop Thomas J. Tobin shares the views of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops reflecting the need for immediate need for comprehensive immigration reform. But, until then, "these types of problems and dilemmas will continue to exist and divide our community."

The diocese's statement says "contrary to what some have said, Governor Carcieri is not mean-spirited or uncaring -- certainly that was not his intention in issuing the executive order. Bishop Tobin recognizes the governor's constitutional duty to enforce existing law."

But, the statement adds, "it is very unfortunate that this policy targets a vulnerable community whose members are also children of God, our brothers and sisters in the human family."

The diocese also noted that details regarding a "religious event" on Wednesday discussing the issue of immigration will be announced tomorrow.

A host of community groups, joined by the lieutenant governor, today urged that the order be rescinded. Carcieri, in a statement from his office, "reaffirmed" the need for the order.

Good job governor. You finally did something practical.

Now if you would be so kind, as to enforce the law aginst anyone, including the BISHOP. for anyone to aid or abet illegal immigration into our country.

Fellow RI'ers, stop giving money to the Bishop. He is only working against you and against the law.

As a Christian and caring person,I realize we are all God's children and should all be working for the good of our state to make it a better place to live. The word illegal should say it all and anyone and everyone related to these people should be concerned. To immigrants, illegal means deportation as to citizens, illegal would threaten imprisonment. The executive order by the Governor should stand,as we the people of the State of RI should also try to remember that "respect for autority", respect for our brothers and sisters along with self respect are no longer part of our society.

How about helping those of us who were born in the USA, work full time and pay taxes but struggle from paycheck to paycheck, make too much to qualify for any state or religious aid but don't have enough to buy gasoline, heat or groceries?

Oh this is rich: a moral judgement coming from the same religious organization that has been closing schools and churches in all of the poorest communities in the state with the highest population of immigrants.

Maybe the poor shall inherit the earth, but the rich white folks are the ones that leave fat checks in their budget envelopes.
