Dog attacks Smithfield teen, then turns on mother

SMITHFIELD -- A 15-year-old girl was bitten by a dog inside her home today, and when her mother tried to get the dog away, it turned on her, police said.

The girl was lying on the floor in the 227 Farnum Pike house shortly after 5 p.m. with the dog, identified as a bull terrier , next to her, according to Smithfield police Lt. Ken Brown.

She pushed the dog away at some point, and it apparently turned on her. One of her lips may have been bitten off in the attack, according to police.

The girl's mother saw the dog attack and tried to get the dog away, and the dog then turned and bit the mother, according to police.

The dog, said to weigh 50 to 60 pounds, was identified as a bull terrier, according to Smithfield patrol officer Melissa Nye.

Brown said the family had only had the dog for about two weeks, and that it was a gift from a family friend.

When the fire department personnel arrived, the dog kept them at bay for a time, not allowing them in. They got in once Robert Salisbury, the animal control officer, was able to secure the dog, Brown said.

The girl was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence. The mother was also taken to a hospital.

The dog has been impounded.

PUT THAT THING TO SLEEP!

Having been the victim of an unprovoked dog bite several months ago, my heartfelt sympathy to both of these victims. I can only remember how much physical pain and anguish I went through compounded by the post traumatic stress disorder that follows me even unto this day.

One of the most difficult things in my case is that the dog's owner has never apologized for allowing the dog free to commit an unprovoked attack.

For this daughter and mother, I wish them well and hope the physical, emotional and psychological scars heal and the dog is not allowed back in the home. The belief is that if the dog has bitten once, he or she will have a greater propensity to bite again. In the case of the dog that bit me, the dog is still around after biting at least two people including me.

For the family friend who gave the dog to these two individuals, what was the reason for getting rid of the dog? I would be interested in knowing why a dog which is obviously near grown at 50-60 pounds is given away.

Thank God I had a good attorney for the legal issues that followed as well as great medical workers which took care of me following the aftermath of my attack.

My significant other was the most help standing by me from the very beginning in support and care that was bestowed on me every step of the way.

God bless those who were injured.

26 years ago my daughter was viciously attacked by a dog because she was 'in the way'. Thanks to the quick reaction of her babysitter, the fire rescue, ER staff, and her Doc, 125 stitches in her face and head later, she's fine. We also never got an apology from the dogs' owner, as a matter of fact I had no insurance then and ended up having to sue them for the bill, they wouldn't even pay that!!

I hope that you two are well, that you heal well, and that you have much support. I also hope that the dog is put down. The dog that attacked my daughter had never bit before but had attacked other kids and growled and snapped, and at that time every dog got one free bite!!

While I feel great sympathy for the child and mother for what they had to endure, what I am wondering is this.....I don't think there is any way, short of the dog severing an artery that would have kept me from getting that dog of my child, I would've moved heaven and earth to protect my child, while I wasn't there and do not know the details, I know that it would have been me spending days in the hospital with sever injuries, not my child. And where was the "boyfriend" that brought the dog into the house in the first place? Did anyone notice on the news report that the boyfriend was asked if there was a problem with the child and the dog before.....his response was "no, not really"....WHAT?!?!?!?!
