Senate to vote on bill allowing 24-hour gambling

PROVIDENCE -- The state's two licensed slot parlors would remain open round-the-clock on weekends and federal and state holidays under a bill being considered in the General Assembly.

The Senate planned to vote Tuesday on the bill, which would apply to both Twin River in Lincoln and Newport Grand.

Under the bill, the facilities could allow gambling 24 hours a day on weekends and holidays.

On all other days, the facilities would have to close by 3 p.m.

Proponents say that the expanded gambling hours could bring in millions of dollars of revenue for Rhode Island, easing the state's ongoing financial crisis.

The full House has yet to take action on the bill.

3 pm? Shouldn't that be 3 am?

Most of us believe that a compulsive gambler is someone who Just. Can't. Leave.
Gambling casinos should never have been allowed in this state, and most certainly we should never have allowed our legislators to shoot craps on our collective long-term financial security by balancing the budget on our 'piece of the action.'
How many homes balance their own budgets on projected wins from the one-armed bandits? Not many, I'll bet.
Just. Say. No.

The fact that this bill is even on the table is a reflection of the immorality we have stooped to in our state. God help us. Is this the Vegas strip? Instead of just dropping the "Providence Plantations" off of our state name, as long as we're thinking of renaming it, why don't we just name our state Babylon? That is what we are coming to. I heard US Senate candidate Christopher Young speak out against this bill, as well as Rep. Victor Moffitt and Rodney Driver - and I completely agree with them. This bill preys on the weakest and lonliest within our society, people who now are at least forced to go home for a few hours. But that's not good enough for Twin River and Lincoln Park - no, they want them in here 24 hours a day! They don't just want these people's life savings and social security checks, they want their houses and their kid's college funds, too! Staying open for those last extra hours would enable these casinos to now more completely destroy these people's lives. Besides the blatant immorality of this bill, the concept does not even make sense economically. The $14 million it is 'projected' to bring in is a bandaid on the broken neck of our 600 million+ deficit anyway - and the social services costs that would arise as the result of it would actually put us even deeper in the hole than before. But the bottom line is this: This $14 million would be blood money. I beg the legislature to listen to your conscience and vote against it, and remember that we all answer to God in the end.
