Known as the Truth in Music Advertising Act, it would penalize knockoff musical groups that misrepresent themselves as originals. Civil fines would run from $5,000 to $10,000 for violations. The House bill is sponsored by Rep. Peter John Petrarca, D-Lincoln. Under the legislation, a band must include at least one member of the original recording group. Tribute bands would not be affected. The bill now goes to the Senate. Similar bills have passed in many states. In February, Jon "Bowser" Bauman, the former baritone singer of the doo-wop revival group Sha Na Na, testified at the State House in support of the legislation. Bauman is chairman of the Truth in Music Committee of the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and in testimony cited The Drifters, The Coasters, The Platters and The Marvelettes, whose names are being used by other performing ensembles in the country. -- projo.com staff writer Michael P. I'm glad that the State of Rhode Island is finally getting up to speed to protect these artists rights. The fake groups including Drifters, Coasters, Marvelettes, etc. are taking money from the original artists many of who are struggling since their recording contracts gave them virtually nothing! Most of the boomers to golden agers who are still performing can use the money. Just think.... most of the Motown artists are in their mid to late 60's, doo wop groups in their 70's, British Invasion groups late 50's to early 60's Heck, even Van Halen is over 40!
Hopefully, the Senate and the Governor WILL DO THE RIGHT THING LIKE THE HOUSE DID!
