Group takes credit for throwing pie at Friedman

A YouTube account holder who posted a video of two people throwing whipped "pies" at columnist Thomas Friedman before an Earth Day speech at Brown claimed the pie-throwers, and others who distributed leaflets, are a group called "Greenwash Guerrillas." The group has posted press releases and a link to the video on its Web site.

One of the pie-throwers was identified yesterday as a Brown student. A statement from the university said the student was "apprehended." The incident will be reviewed by the school's non-academic disciplinary system, the statement said.

Friedman, a Pulitzer-prize winning author and columnist for the New York Times, has coined the term "geo-green" to describe an environmental advocacy that, through the mechanisms of capitalism, he believes can strengthen both our political and economic standing in the world.

Leaflets dropped by attendees who ran out of Friedman's lecture said he deserved a pie in the face for suggesting that the free market and "techno fixes can save us from climate change," and for his support of the war in Iraq.

Your Turn: Would you throw a pie at a speaker to make a point?

His support of the Iraq War and his use suggestion that we can somehow band-aid the system to fix our environmental problems are indeed disgusting.

He deserved it.

Too bad that 'global warming' is a big fat myth created by the communists to try to bring down capitalism and tax us all to death.

No speaker deserves to be assaulted by a rag-tag bunch of communists- even if the speaker himself is just barely on the side of reality- while giving a speech at an institition of higher learning. You wouldn't like it if it were you on that stage.

Nice reception. Looks like they need pie-proof glass at Brown auditoriums. And I love the way they jumped right up there and helped him off the stage to clean up. Thank goodness they weren't a truly violent group. Is there security at those events? They got in with a couple of big pie plates full of shave cream with no one noticing. That speaker won't be back any time soon.

If these kids truly believe in their cause then why didn't they stay and explain their action instead of running away like pathetic cowards. They remind me of little kids flinging snots at the adults.. They should consider themeselves fortunate that the speaker did not slip and fall during their assault on him. If they are Brown students they should be expelled and If I were Mr.Friedman I would file assault charges on them so that they carry this record in their backgrounds for the rest of their lives..

What a bunch of babies, stay there and explain yourself, as misguided as I'm sure they are.

As a Brown student and everyday citizen, I find this behavior extremely disgusting and cowardly. This sort of act tarnishes our wonderful school's reputation and discourages lecturers and other guests from returning. An honored guest like Thomas Friedman who went out of his way to come to Providence deserved to be treated with respect, regardless of how others perceive him. This is certainly not representative of Brown's student body as a whole. If they wished to prove a point, they should've questioned him civilly and intelligently at the appropriate time. Being at Brown is a privilege and is one that shouldn't be abused. I hope something like this will never happen again.

Did you ever think that students attending a school as liberal as Brown would abuse someone's free speech rights? Oh wait, you can only speak freely if you *agree* with them. Talk about intellectual dishonesty! Classic...

Is there a reason why these students were not arrested and charged with assault? Despite their intelligence, they need to recognize the consequences of their actions - and one cannot just throw a pie in a person's face because they do not agree with them. It disgraces free speech, Brown University, and their own character. The protective shield of academia needs to come down in the this case and these kids need to be exposed to the rules of the real world.
