Warwick police ask for help with fatal accident

A 46-year-old woman is dead after a late night crash near the Kent County Courthouse in Warwick.

According to the police, just before 11:30 p.m. yesterday, a 17-year-old male was driving a Volkswagen Jetta south on Route 2/Quaker Lane, approaching the intersection with Quaker Way.

West Warwick resident Luisa Avila, driving north on Route 2/Quaker Lane, was making a left turn onto Quaker Way when her car, a 1990 Toyota Camry, was broadsided by the Jetta, according to Warwick Police Col. Steve McCartney.

Avila was pronounced dead on the scene by rescue personnel; the 17-year-old driver and his 16-year-old male passenger were taken to Kent County Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries that aren't considered life threatening.

McCartney said the cause of the crash is under investigation by the city's accident reconstruction team. There is a traffic light at the intersection of Route 2/Quaker Lane and Quaker Way; police do not know if either of the drivers ran a red light.

The police are asking that any witnesses contact the department at 463-4374 or on the department’s tip line, 732-8477.

I am not surprised. That intersection is horrible. While waiting at that light to go left, the cars are coming up on the right at speeds above 60 MPH!!! I make that turn towards the couthouse approximately 4 times daily and have to wait before I turn because the oncoming traffic are CONSTANTLY running the light at high speeds... I am so so surprised that this intersection was not looked at as an issue already. It is very dangerous!

Yes, I agree. Not just that intersection is like that. Many around the state are like this, for example, the light to turn left at the intersection of Rte 1 and Oak Hill, where South County Nursing Home is...In all of these instances, it is so dangerous for these drivers waiting for the left turn while cars behind them are coming up at speed of 50-70 mph.

I respectfully disagree with the previous comment. The speed limit there is 45 and most people along that stretch drive far BELOW the posted limit, which can be frustrating. I think we run into a problem everywhere these days, though, with people running traffic lights. But we can't rush to judgment on this accident because we don't know who went through the light. Sometimes in the later evening, it can be a pain to sit at a long light for no apparent reason. There were two deaths last night in that area, may God comfort those left behind and may their souls rest in peace.

Problem is the number of people who disrespect Red lights in the first place! Wehn did Yellow mean floor it and it seems commonplace to wait for 2-3 cars to run every red light. People are in too much of a hurry and completely oblivious to anything other than their phones etc? One other question I had was anyone know when directional signals became optional on vehicles?

WHAT PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND IN RI IS THAT LEFT HAND TURNS INTO TRAFFIC ARE BASICALLY THE PERSON MAKING THE TURNS FAULT....YOU ARE CROSSING OVER THE LANE THAT HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY....PEOPLE NEED TO BE REAL CAREFUL OF THIS..ALSO DIRECTIONALS IN RI???/CARS HAVE THEM?????SORRY TO HEAR OF THIS ACCIDENT MAY SEH REST IN PEACE..

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all involved.

The person taking the left at that particular intersection DOES have the right of way because there if a traffic light there!

Thank you. We appreciate your kind words. Nobody really knows what happened yet, and we may never really know, but a hard-working woman with a heart of gold, and a beautiful laugh is gone now. We'll miss her.

I thought 17-year-olds weren't supposed to be driving without an adult present at night. Strikes me that nearly every accident I see features a saggy-panted boy or pony-tailed girl standing mouth agape next to their wreck of a car. Gee, is there a trend here?

"There were two deaths last night in that area, "
What was the other one?

I am sorry to hear of the accident, but also not surprised. I have been at that light many nights waiting to take a left turn and have watched people FLY through RED lights, not yellow lights, but red lights. I have always been concerned about getting hit from people flying through this light. Police presence is needed here.

My heart goes out to the family; of this hard working mother of two. Some little punk thinks that it is ok to speed, and it cost the family a daughter, sister and mother. Hopefully the Attorney General will prosecute this case fully, and hand out the deserved punishment. God Bless you and your family.
