Barrington teen gets 6 months in alcohol-related crash

PROVIDENCE — A Barrington teenager was sentenced this morning to six months in the state Training School for driving while impaired, fleeing a police officer at Colt State Park and then slamming into a wall, pinning a pedestrian beneath his car on Dec. 29.

The 17-year-old Barrington High School student must perform 200 hours of community service, write a letter of apology to the victim and undergo alcohol counseling, and he cannot have a driver’s license until he’s 21.

After reviewing a background report on the teen, the Attorney General’s Office withdrew a petition seeking to have him waived out of Family Court and into an adult court.

As part of a plea agreement accepted today, the teen admitted to driving to endanger with serious bodily injury resulting, driving while impaired, eluding a police officer, destruction of state property and possession of alcohol by a minor.

The teen, whose name has not been released publicly because of his age, stood before the judge, saying his actions were "inexcusable," and apologizing to the victim, who was in court.

The teen also apologized to his family, friends and the community of Barrington.

“This is a child with great potential,” Family Court Chief Judge Jeremiah S. Jeremiah Jr. said in sentencing the teen. “I don’t understand why the children of Barrington have such a problem.” He said 12 other Barrington teens have been referred to his court for alcohol possession charges.

CORRECTION: The initial version of this report incorrectly described the driving while impaired charge.

I am so sad for this young man and the stupid choice he made three months ago. I commend his decision to accept responsibility, his remorse, and humility.
My prayers are with the victim of the crime, the young man and his family - and the young people of Rhode Island who don't understand that the difference between this guy and them is a whiff of fate, and nothing else.

I applaude this teenager taking:
1) responsibility for his actions
2) apologizing to the person who suffered serious injury
3) Not blaming anyone but himself for a poor judgment leading to where he is today.

I wish that his community service involved going around to area high schools and talking to other teenagers about his experience.

I too agree that many have chosen to drive when they shouldn't but they have not been caught. Circumstances can quickly change. Let this be a reminder to ALL OF US.

We see too few young people accepting responsibility for their actions. It is high time a a change in our society and the world around us. The first step is admitting our faults otherwise there can be no change.

This incident has nothing to do with a "whiff of fate, and nothing else" as the previous comment read. However, it has everything to do with bad decisions and lack of respect for the law and the saftey of innocent people! HE GOT OFF EASY!!!!

Wow, taking responsibility for his actions like an adult instead of hiding behind a clueless mommy and daddy- are we SURE he's a Barrington kid???

Jeremiah doesn't understand why the kids of Barrington have such a problem. It is so very clear, because THE PARENTS OF BARRINGTON HAVE A PROBLEM. Every occasion is celebrated with a drink-from a first tooth to college graduation-when the parents stay home and start parenting instead of needing to be seen at a local bar, then maybe Jack and Jill will have have better role models. The only things "dry' in this town are lawns in mid August-I have never seen so many mothers with the need to drink-

"and the young [OR OLD] people of Rhode Island [WHO DRINK AND DRINK AND DON'T GET CAUGHT] who don't understand [THAT THEY AREN'T INVINCIBLE]that the difference between this guy [WHOSE IDIOCY RESULTED IN HURTING SOMEONE] and them [WHOSE IDIOCY HASN'T HURT ANYONE YET!!!]is a whiff of fate, and nothing else"

I believe I used the words "stupid choice" in my comment, referring of course to the choice to drink - under age and illegal - and to drink - impaired and illegal.

6 months for drunk driving, drinking under the legal age, fleeing from the police, damaging property, and almost killing someone? Wow! What a punishment. That'll set an example for others...NOT! He could have killed not only himself but more importantly, innocent people. I would have given him a year at the training school, 500 hours of community service, not let him renew his license until he's 21, and made his parents pay a $10,000 fine. Maybe that would make parents think twice before letting their get drunk.

This is a fair punishment for this boy. I hope his community service involves visiting the emergency rooms of local hospitals and see first hand that drinking and driving equals tragedy. This is not a "Barrington problem". It happens all over. Regardless, at the rate Barrington is going, they may as well move the High School to the training school, they all seem to be ending up there!

Another Barrington teenager in yet another predicament...ho hum...don't they have anything else to do once prep school gets out? I am bored beyond belief at these kids. So he apologized. Okay, he's halfway there.
And why is the Attorney General's office letting him off the hook? He should be tried as an adult. Big deal, he loses his license...to drive his BMW. He doesn't get much sympathy here. No wonder the insurance rates for males 16-24 are so high...because of nitwits like him.
And the judge...shame on him also. "This is a child with great potential." Key word: Child -- put him back on his tricycle.

i happen to know the family and there is NO BMW, NO MERCEDES, NO FANCY CARS...and this is NOT a family that celebrated ANYTHING with a drink...so...for all those out there thinking they know EVERYTHING about this family, keep an eye on your own family...you never know when trouble can visit your loved one.
