Democrats criticize Carcieri's immigration order

State Democratic Party officals today sharply criticized Governor Carcieri for signing an executive order on illegal immigration that they charge "essentially mandates racial profiling."

Tim Grilo, the state party's executive director, said in a news release this afternoon that rather than host a meeting and invite minority community leaders to the table, the governor "chose the low road and took another cheap political shot."

State Rep. Grace Diaz, D-Providence, said in the statement that the governor's "spiteful tone not only encourages racial profiling bit it encourages outright discrimination against legal citizens of the state."

Yesterday, Carcieri, a Republican, signed the order and held a news conference at which he saidthe order will enable "a vast array of state organizations" to address illegal immigration.

“This is not about taking a hard line against immigrants,” Carcieri said yesterday. “It’s about making sure that those who come here can realize their goals of economic security and a better quality of life.”

Referring to his own immigrant roots, Carcieri said he supports people who follow legal channels to get the American dream.

“The motive is to get control of an issue that has to be dealt with,” Carcieri said. “If you’re here illegally, you shouldn’t be here.”

I am so, so glad that the Projo's circulation continues decline and therefore does their stranglehold on propaganda in this state. You continue to lie by referring to "immigration" when the issue is "illegal immigration". To refer to them interchangeably is like referring to sex and rape interchangeably; and yet that is what the dolts at the Projo continue to do.

When will these people get it.

Look at the polls. The people of RI want something done about illegals

The Governor has the backing of the people on this one!

I ask Rep.Diaz: How does this discriminate agaist LEGAL imigrants ? If you are here legally, then you have nothing to worry about. My concern is that there are too many illegals here taking advantage of the taxpayers generosity and not taking the responsibilities that come from being a legal citizen. Can illegals vote? Not yet but judging from the nonsense coming from the Dems. they would probably love it if they could that way they could bribe them into voting the straight Dem. ticket to continue their Party's corrupt hold on this state for the last 75 years or more. I applaud Gov.Carcieri for sticking his neck out and dealing with this problem for the good of the taxpayers. Too bad our spend and tax legislature doesn't have the guts to see the Gov's action for what it really is instead of politicising it and grandstanding.

Brovo to the Governor, this should have been implemmented years ago, and many of our problems,
would have been corrected. We need to have this done State wide. We need to get these illegal
aliens to come back legally and become part of the American Society.

THIS IS THE TYPE OF STUPIDITY AND BAD JUDGMENT THAT MAKES ME NOT WANT TO BE A DEMOCRAT ANYMORE. STOP THIS BS! THIS IS NOT A RACIAL ISSUE! WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS IN AMERICA. THIS IS ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ARE HERE ILLEGALLT AND MOSTLY NOT PAYING TAXES! I AGREE WITH THE GOVERNOR. IT IS ABOUT TIME!

I am ashame of the Democrat's, being a democrat I think the governor acted in good faith when he signed an executive order on illegal immigrants. This is the best thing that has happen to this state, so shame on those few democrat's who have voiced their opinion against the governor. Those few don't listen to the majority, lets hope the people remember and vote them out in the next election. R.R.H

This is plain wrong..The Governor has no how bad the federal government treats this people that just came to better their lives. He thinks that the immigration dept is nice, no way. Immigration is a broken system and the Governor shall understand that
this people will suffer by him taking this measurement. I don't think the Governor understand the implication of what he is doing. He is taking this too personal. He is not helping at all... I think that He shall pray to God for guidance. I will pray that God give him wisdom.. not to do the wrong thing

I hope it wouldn't be considered racist to say, "Three cheers for Governor Carcieri." I served five and one half years in the Armed Services of America, and four of my brothers also served their full military commitments. Three of them went on to full careers in law enforcement in this state. Our goals were to protect and to serve the citizens of the United States and the citizens of Rhode Island. I would hate to think that our beliefs in law and order did not apply to every legal citizen of our beloved country. I therefore endorse the Governor's executive Order.

Sorry to say, but we are all immigrations. Carcieri needs to do his family tree and he will see that he himself is an immigrant as well as his family............we are all immigrant one way or another!!!

That's nice of Grace Diaz. She should stick to such significant issues as outlawing "cellophane" because she's a modern incarnation of the ethnic ward heeler type of politician who panders by instilling fear into a group of people defined by either race, national origin, religion, or culture in order to make them vote as a bloc. This is nothing new in the USA,but I hoped it was going the way of the rotary telephone.
The democrat party leadership in this state doesn't seem to have a handle on the attitudes of many of its constituents nor even a fair number of elected officials under its aegis.
By the way Juan Pichardo should keep a low profile
after showing the state what a pathetic buffoon he is by trying to use his office to buy after hours weiners-no big deal really, just an insight into his character.

Here we go again!! Everytime someone steps up to attempt a solution to stop all the illegals in our country, SOMEONE COMES ALONG AND CALLS IT "RACIAL PROFILING" Pay attention!! This is not Racial profiling!!!! If I broke the law would I not be held accountable?? What is the difference here?? This is why we get nowhere with the illegal problem. We go around in circles. Where will it all end??

If you are here Illegally, you are a burden on a system that cannot afford you regardless of race or color. It is predictable and reprehensible that RI's democrats cry foul in their politically motivated response.

As an immigrant, who became a naturalized citizen by following legal channels, I do not understand the opposition to following the rule of law.

Utopia must be a very nice place for those bleeding-heart, liberal , middle-class Americans who do not understand basic economics; and to those folks, I would challenge them to consider the following scenario:

A family of illegal immigrants move into your neighborhood but instead of giving your tax dollars to the state tax collector, I suggest that you walk over to their house and give them money directly from YOUR wallet to pay for there education, health care etc.

The state is not a money pit - it is YOUR money.

With a budget deficit, regardless of how we got there, (it is what it is) charity should, and must, begin at home.

We cannot afford this level of charity when we have a poor underclass in the USA that is neglected.
