Section of Rt. 84, Conn., shut down, homes evacuated
WATERBURY, Conn. -- State police say dozens of homes in the area of a tractor trailer accident on Interstate 84 in the Waterbury/Middlebury area have been evacuated as a precaution.
The evacuations took place in the Shadduck Road area following the shutdown of I-84 in both directions from an early morning tractor trailer rig accident Tuesday.
A police dispatcher says 60-70 people were evacuated from 25 to 30 homes.
The rig, which overturned about 5:30 a.m. today near exit 17, has been leaking hydrogen gas, a very volatile gas.
The highway had initially been shut down westbound, but continuing problems prompted the closing of the highway eastbound from exit 16.
The state Department of Transportation said the accident would take several hours to clear.
State police were at the scene early today rerouting traffic but the shut down has caused substantial backups.
