Rescued seal heads home today

It’s a cold day for a swim, unless you’ve got blubber keeping you warm.

Luckily for the harp seal rescued from Watch Hill, it’s got blubber.

The seal was rescued on Jan. 16 from Napatree Point. The Mystic Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue team nursed it back to health, and has deemed the animal fit to return to the wild.

The seal is set to be released at 11:30 a.m. from Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown, at the end of East Beach Road, where the rescue team releases many of its rescued animals.

Each year, the staff cares for more than 50 stranded animals including whales, dolphins, porpoises, sea turtles and, of course, seals.

Learn more about the animal rescue program on the aquarium's Web site.
