I'm happy for them that they have this new house, but I hope the EM people insulated the heck out of it and did other energy saving building things so that the combination of the utility bills and property taxes aren't a burden.

I believe that Extreme Home Makeover is one of the best programs and best way to help people in need. I myself would love to work for the show and us my carpenter skills to work I am only 24 years old but I have been help people build and help other all my life. Thank goodness for Extreme Home makeover.

Volunteers are doing a wonderful thing for the family. And for ABC.

I would volunteer if ABC agreed to give up its profits from the series. Otherwise, I would keep volunteering and sending money to charities that don't get on TV every week.

God Bless your family and your new home. Extreme Home Makeover made an excellent choice; you deserve this dream come true. I am friends with the Silva family of Rumford and wish the world could see how you all have made a difference in so many childrens lives

Patty | February 25, 2008 2:32 PM link

I am sure they are great and deserving people, but how could the state allow them to adopt and foster children in that house if it was so unfit?

k | February 25, 2008 3:05 PM link

I went to HS with Kenny Silva and he was kind hearted then, its so wonderful what he and his wife do for these children. I am so happy for them and wish them all the best in their new home. They deserve it! Extreme Makeover Home Edition is the best show ever!

Gina Botham-Allen | February 25, 2008 3:35 PM link

who is going to help them pay taxes and utilities? i wish the best for them and congrats .

heather | February 25, 2008 3:40 PM link

Well heather, since they probably won't have a mortgage anymore, there's all that money to go towards their classically RI property taxes.

EMT | February 25, 2008 4:12 PM link

I'm confused by EMT's comment. Why won't they have a mortgage anymore?

JS | February 25, 2008 4:54 PM link

I agree with the comment that "k" made below. My mother and I were wondering the same thing! Well, at least now the house is better for the family. It's nice that someone in RI finally got something like that. Congratulations to them!

Most of the times on this show, the mortgage usually gets paid off, or something of this sort. Extremely generous

kelly | February 25, 2008 6:17 PM link

I think CVS Corporation has paid the mortgage for them.

lynn | February 25, 2008 6:47 PM link

To JS, they won't have a mortgage anymore because CVS contributed to pay off their mortgage. They will only have to worry about the utilities, taxes and the cost of every day living which is enough for anyone. Good for them!!!!!!

dori | February 25, 2008 6:48 PM link

Well you go Ty another sucessful adventure. These people deseve it!!! To all you people with negative comments keep them to yourself. This is a time of coming together and helping our community. And for all you people wondering about the morgage. CVS has paid there mortgage to Bank of America and in turn Bank of America will be giving the famliy back the money. So I think Kenny will be able to pay his taxes like he was already doing. You will all just have to wait till the spring for all the details. Oh and by the way I am sure they have insulated the house well and made proper energy saving plans. Have you watched the show??? Congrats to the Silva's enjoy and I will be by to check out the house.

Tina | February 25, 2008 6:50 PM link

Nobody said the house was unfit! Just not enough room for this wonderful family who have their own children and have generous hearts to adopt children who needed a HOME not a CASTLE. From the sounds of it they had a warming and loving HOME, now they have the CASTLE! Kudo's to them. Nice job everyone.

I do feel very happy for the Silva family that got their wish come thru. But at the same time I feel so unfortunate because recently I lost my home and now I'm living on a rented place and I can barely make it. Sometimes I do not even have food to put on the table and it makes me sad because I do have a 13 year old diabetic son and it gets harder and harder everyday. But anyways CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

IRMA ACEVEDO | February 25, 2008 8:08 PM link

As a real estate agent for some 22 years in the Warwick and a big fan of Extreme make over. How great to see a Rhode Island family benefited. However someone told me that the house they had was not lead safe. What a sin to threaten a family with losing their children because of such an issue, if what I was told is true. please do not event get me started how stupid can we be? We allow MFN status to nations mnfg toys with lead paint. While we injure U.S. citizens trying to do their best to raise families....

Nancy Drew | February 25, 2008 8:11 PM link

To Tina:

The Silva's were picked for the show because their house had high levels of lead along with the backyard. So not only do they have a bigger house but much safer too!

I forgot to mention hey all you rhodies who wish to use their talents to help others. Why don't we all start a group of craftsman to help those in need. I have tried to help home owners in the past who are up against it. They have homes willing to struggle along but need a little help with repairs. There really is nowhere for those folks to turn. What stops us from pooling our talents? Nancy Drew mom of Heather re

Right now, there are many of homeowners who could use help; If any big corporation is interested in paying off mortgages, you may contact me as soon as possible. I am very happy for the family and want to see more happiness spread around.

Donna | February 25, 2008 10:29 PM link

Amazing how any forum can become a debate! For Heavens sake! Let's be happy for them...Ext Hm Mkvr has done this, shall we say, a few times before....They know what to do and how to be sure there is no burden for the family! Good grief! Quit your negative comments, and go be jealous somewhere else! :o) God Bless the Silva's!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Why nobody seems to notice the absurdity of a $190.000 mortgage on a shack.

josh | February 25, 2008 11:53 PM link

What a terrific change. I just can't wait until all of the rich people come to our little state to buy our real estate, demolish our punky ranches and capes, and build huge McMansions more in keeping with our new Princess Grace of Monaco lifestyle. Of course, being one of the middle-class peons, I can no longer afford this place, so I will be moving to someplace cheap in the Appalachians, but I do wish you all the best of luck, and will buy one of these McMansios myself once I hit at the casino, which is bound to happen one of these days since I go there nearly every day now.

Kerouac | February 26, 2008 7:52 AM link

Hi Nancy,
You have a wonderful suggestion, especially considering the tragedy you have recently experienced. I am so sorry for your senseless loss. The problem with your idea is even volunteer organizations take alot of money for insurance and up front costs. Although ABC has quite the thing going with all these people volunteering thousands and thousands of man-hours, and they get the profits from the commercials... there are still many costs that they incur. But I would love to talk to you about your idea of a local not-so-extreme- makeover in Rhode Island!

Paula | February 26, 2008 7:56 AM link

People who want to help, I would suggest two things, maybe there are more:

Habitat for Humanity probably has something going on.

Where I lived before, there were projects to help senior citizens and the disabled with house repairs. Local senior centers might be able to coordinate this. It was both with day to day stuff, and also periodically they would find someone whose house had just gotten beyond them in terms of maintenance, and blitz it with repairs, cleanup, and cleaning up the yard.

SOME OF THESE COMMENTS SOUND LIKE THERE IS SOME JEALOUS PEOPLE OUT THERE WHAT A SHAME ONLY IN RHODE ISLAND WOULD PEOPLE PUT SOME OF THESE COMMENTS IN WRITING THIS FAMILY DID SOMETHING RIGHT AND DESERVE IT MAYBE YOU SHOULD TALK TO THE FAMILY BEFORE JUDGING THEM AND THERE HOME

DIANE | February 26, 2008 8:54 AM link

CVS paid off their mortgage - and I have noticed many other CVS huge contributions on this show - they get some national publicity but really not much recognition on a local basis. Maybe when all their execs come up for trial this type of charitable work will come in handy. You can fault them for many things, but not in the arena of charity. Though I wish they would diversity from solely giving to children's causes.

Dan | February 26, 2008 8:59 AM link

Congrats to the Silva Family! Good things DO happen to good people! Too bad there are always going to be people making negative comments!
For those asking why the state placed foster children in a house that was "so unfit", there are always plenty of children needing a good home and never enough caring people like the Silvas to give one to them. A good home is more about the love people like the Silvas offer than about the building they are housed in. God Bless the Silvas!

Randy and Diane | February 26, 2008 9:41 AM link

Their mortgage was paid off by CVS. I think this was wonderful that the show did this for these great people. Finally, a story about giving and charity in RI. I think it's refreshing to see, especially in this day and age, where people just don't seem to care about each other any more....

ZD | February 26, 2008 11:18 AM link

I am glad to see a caring family get help. I am a little jealous because my house needs work and I just can't afford it. They have grants for low income family's in Warwick, but that's just one more bill I would have to pay back, but there are lot of people worst off them I am.
They seem like a good family, and I am glad that they got the help they needed.
I was surprise to see the condition of the house, it didn't look like a house you would send foster children, but anyway the foster children have a beautiful house now.

Ray R. Hogarth | February 26, 2008 6:30 PM link

to tina, the house was full of lead. that is why they tore it down. the kids were full of lead.
