Blue Cross chief Montanaro to step down

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island announced this evening that Frank J. Montanaro will resign as board chairman when his term ends April 30.

Blue Cross & Blue Shield said that will give the Board of Directors "ample time to elect his replacement," the state's dominant health insurer said in a news release shortly after 6 p.m.

"My decision comes after a great deal of reflection," said Montanaro in the statement. "Having been on the board for many years, it¹s my belief that BCBSRI has never been in better hands. I ask the remaining board members to continue the tradition of keeping BCBSRI an organization that takes the very best care of its members and the citizens of the state."

Montanaro has been a board member since 1991. Before being elected chairman in 2004, he served as secretary of the corporation from 2002 to 2004.

Montanaro is also the president of the state's unit of the AFL-CIO union, and a Democratic National Committeeman.

James E. Purcell, president and CEO, said of Montanaro: "He always has fought for the people of Rhode Island and their families. Thus, his legacy is not just the bottom line. It's the human touch. I am so proud to have had Frank serve as chairman of the board."

The new Blue Cross chairman would be in place when Montanaro¹s term ends, Blue Cross & Blue Shield said.

It's about time. Ask Frank about how he screwed the Smithfield Firefighters. Better yet, ask them!!!

I worked with Frank during out attempt to bring a port to Quonset. He was a tireess adocate and worker for the effort. Today we know had there been a port the economy of RI would have been much better off. Frank is a true asset to the state and I know BCBS will miss his leadership as the chairman of their board--good luck to Frank.

what happened to FREE Speech ProJo? Your definition of Personal attacks may be my definition of exposing corruption. Well I say good by to Montanaro. All I know is that my monthly fee to Blue Cross and shot up under him, the reserves are out of control high, which is outrageous for a non-profit, and investigations, indictments, deals and out of control lavish spending is his legacy. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD BYE

Mr. Montanaro is the consummate polital operative who exercses gross conflict of interest in all his personal and BCBSRI dealings. He advocates not for the citizens of RI, or even the BCBSRI subsribers, but rather a small group of union bosses & the firefighters & himself at all our expense. He should have been thrown off this Board years ago.

Talk about a waste of a human being. He doesn't serve anyone other than himself and his crony union plas. He has done as much bad for the state of RI as anyone in recent history. James Purcell....another joke in RI......He's getting out of BCBS because you''' soon see sone sort of investigation on their dealings in RI.....

Frank Montanaro has worked tirelessly for working Rhode Islanders for decades. If our politicians had the honesty and dedication to their causes that Frank has shown, Rhode Island would not be in the mess it is now. Rhode Island needs more people like Frank who can compromise and find solutions rather than clubbing their employees into the ground. While fat cat administrators walk away with big salaries, they try to nickel and dime windows, orphans, and the workers.

Don't let the door slam you in the butt on the way out.

The bottom line | February 15, 2008 1:49 PM link

Guess BCBS didn't want to have to scramble to replace him after he gets indicted.

Frank has done more good for the working people of RI than anyone I know. He is a kind, wonderful person who has helped numerous people in the state. I wish him health and happiness in his future endeavors.
