Barrington pair plead no contest to social host charge

A husband and wife charged under the state’s social host law for serving alcohol to minors each pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges.

Gabriel A. Pacheco, 48, and Mary Lou Pacheco, 45, of Northwest Passage in Barrington will each have to perform 100 hours of community service at an emergency room, and pay $350 to the victims of violent crimes fund.

Both will also be on probation for six months after which, if they stay out of legal trouble, the offense will be removed from their records.

The couple’s lawyer, Stephen Rappoport, said the Pachecos had wanted to plead guilty to express their support for zero tolerance.

“They wanted to take responsibility,” he said.

The couple was arrested after a New Year’s Eve Party with mostly family.

The police learned about the party after a dozen pictures of under-age Barrington drinkers, ages 17 to 20, were posted online. In one of the pictures, the Pachecos are in the background.

“They understand now,” Rappoport said, “looking back, they made a mistake in judgment.”

Good to hear! They admit their bad judgement, apologized and are willing to accept their punishment. I wish the other parents in Barrington, the ones with kids involved in the recent accidents, would take some responsibility for what their children did. Even if they don't want to admit it, they played a part when they let the teens run around day and night, driving cars and boats with no supervision.

Is this the same couple that owns three gas station/auto repair shops in the East Providence/Seekonk/Rehoboth area (Gabe's Exxon)?

They had no choice but to admit their bad judgement. They belong in jail for their ignorance. After all that has happened in Barrington in the last few years, I have to shake my head in disbeleif that 2 adults(?) could be so defiant of the laws. The judge should have followed suit as was done with the teens who were sent to the training school, and sent these nitwits to jail. But no, send them back to their
cushy Barrington home with a slap on the wrist. These Transplants need to move back to where they came from. They have sent a terrible message to teens in Barrington.

Are you kidding me? $350? If RI wants to get serious on this issue the punishments have to be serious as well. This isn't even a slap on the wrist.

I believe there was a bad example set by the court with this couple. Slap on the wrist!
It doesn't always happen in Barrington, it happens all over the state and country.
The drinking age is 21, these adults should have been charged as if they were being charged for a DWI!
Some parents not only allow it, but the "Clubs" for 18+ allow this too! They allow teenagers to go into the clubs w/ fake ID's! We can all run a Myspace search for kids in RI. You would be amazed at the pictures! Pictures of kids in clubs, w/ club name at bottom of picture!
This is a huge problem nationwide, a tap on the hands of these parents is typical of RI to say the least!!! I wonder who they "knew"!
