Governor to announce bill aimed at easing local taxes

PROVIDENCE -- Governor Carcieri and new Department of Revenue director Gary Sasse will announce legislation tomorrow "designed to implement reforms in cities and towns necessary to bring relief to local taxpayers," the governor's office said this evening.

The “Municipal Fiscal Responsibility Act" has seven provisions that will "reduce taxpayer costs at the city and town level, while ensuring greater accountability," the news release said.

The statement did not provide details about how, but said the news conference tomorrow will be at 10:30 a.m. in the State House's State Room.

As the State approaches a $500 million dollar deficit the Governor proposes to force cities and towns how to be fiscally responsible?

If this bill doesn't include 100% state financing of local schools then its worthless.

Why should the state be 100% responsible for financing LOCAL schools? Regardless, it's all coming out of the taxpayers' pockets. . . given the looming deficit, any proposal must be at least revenue neutral, though, so I would be interested to see what he proposes.

"Regardless, it' all coming out of the taxpayers' pockets..."

That's not true if you think about which taxpayers. The property tax falls hardest on the poor and the income tax falls hardest on the rich. It matters a lot which tax is used to fund our government. Rising property taxes and cuts in income taxes equal a tax cut for rich people, and that's what we've seen over the past ten years.

Even if this proposal sounds credible, it is just another attempt by Governor Bumbles, to close the door long after the horse is gone. How is 'reducing' the local tax burden going to solve a massive deficit? Not even logical. More smoke and mirrors. The root of the problem has been, and continues to be, a massive and corrupt state government. Stop hemorrhaging our dollars to the largest employer in the state first. Stop BSing the taxpayers with these ludicrous schemes and bite the bullet and do what everybody knows, but refuses to accept, needs to be done. In -your-face political crony-ism that has been refined to an art form.
