Teen linked to fatal Barrington crash sent to counseling

An 18-year-old accused of buying alcohol that wound up at party with a 16-year-old who died in a car accident was ordered to attend substance-abuse counseling.

Judge Michael A. Higgins in District Court, Providence, today also ordered Benjamin W. Geldmaker to return to court on Jan. 31 for a pre-trial hearing and a review.

Geldmaker allegedly used a fake ID to buy a 30-pack of beer and gave it to a group of teenagers. The police say the teenagers were drinking at an informal party on Nov. 5 where a teenage driver allegedly got drunk.

Later that night the group decided to drive to Taco Bell in Seekonk.

A teen driver, who allegedly drank six beers, lost control and crashed into a tree while speeding down New Meadow Road, according to the police.

Passenger Jonathan Converse, 16, was killed.

Im sorry but he killed someone. He knew that drinking and driving was wrong but still did it. He should do time. These kids are not going to learn by just sending them to couseling. Both parties involved in this should do time.

all i can do is tell you that i stood right next to the other two at a hockey game the other night in Portsmouth-what bold, shameless, rude brats they are--and I thought Jeremiah said no hockey--they stood there with their hockey jackets and ties on poking fun at the Barrington team because they were getting beat--well, the rest of the team is playing thier hearts out-especailly the goalie who they were having a field day with-Obviuosly, one used to be the goalie-at least the rest of the team didn't contribute to the death of Jon Converse-Jeremiah should have banned them from attending any school function--they didn't know when to keep their mouths shut

Hey Francine did it ever occur to you that those rude shameless brats where there to support there team. That's why they had ties on with their hockey jackets and they were teenage boy just poking fun. I realize the severity of the incident but you are completely out of line judging boys you don't know! When you walk in their shoes then you can criticize until then why don't you keep your mouth shut!

You can say whatever you want but you have no idea what you are talking about. you are so disrespectful and you do not anything about these kids who actually are great kids that made a mistake. you however made a mistake too, what did you get from writing that? think what you want but if it you clueless and rude then keep it to your self. These boys would have said the same thing if they were on the bench. Its called criticism and thats what people do on teams in case you weren't aware..and you are not the judge so do not think you can correct the judge. He made his punishment to them and you have no influence on it. Thank you for your disgusting comment that offended many people.

I too was at the Barrington vs. EG game in Portsmouth the other night. I, unlike others that wish to speculate, happen to know the children that were banned from playing hockey due to recent circumstances. I also recall there being at least 7 boys wearing shirt and ties in Barrington Hockey jackets which begs the question of how you know which ones were punished. Having spoken with the two boys, they are both deeply regretful of their actions, and wish no other that they could have been helping their team towards a win. Granted it would have been bold and shameless if these boys were to poke fun at the outstanding effort displayed by the freshman goaltender. However, being confident in their character, I know these two boys certainly would not do that. I am not trying to say what others have written is false, as there may have been other players making comments. However, I do feel it is my responsibility, being that I know these two boys to clear their name amongst the criticism of others.

As a teammate of the aforementioned suspended players, I have insight into the matter that "Francine" does not. I was not playing in the game due to injury, and spent the entire game with my two suspended teammates, as they are still indeed that- teammates. Anybody who has ever been on a high school athletic team can attest to the amount of good-natured ribbing that goes on- often at the expense of the other players. Being part of the conversation Francine is mentioning, I can assure that none of it was malicious, as the amount of time spent with teammates during a long hockey season outweighs that spent even with one's immediate family. We have been together for almost four years and are comfortable around each other to make jabs and jokes at each other. As far as them being at the game, they are still considered members of the team, if not officially then by us fellow teammates and others. There is no question that there was an error in judgment, but that is up to them and Judge Jeremiah to work out, not a disgruntled eavesdropper who took it upon herself, like so many others, so stand up on an "e-soapbox" and make accusations accusing youths of contributing to the death of another when she clearly does not know all the facts. If she had such a problem with the way the suspended players were acting she could easily have asked them to stop, but instead decided to make a spectacle out of her personal opinion. Please ignore this shameful outburst and allow the appropriate parties to get through the situation without needless speculation and criticism from ignorant people.
