DA: Driver in hit-and-run death was text messaging

TAUNTON, Mass. -- Authorities say the New Bedford man charged in the hit-and-run death of a 13-year-old Taunton boy lost control of his SUV while text messaging on his cell phone.

A Bristol County prosecutor said in Taunton District Court on Friday that Craig Bigos told police he thought he hit a mailbox, and didn't realize he hit Earman Machado until the next day.

Bail was set at $5,000 for Bigos, who pleaded not guilty to charges including motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of an accident with death resulting and driving without a license.

Police say Machado was riding his bicycle just after midnight Thursday when he was struck and killed by the 1995 Ford Explorer. Bigos turned himself in about 14 hours later.

Defense attorney Daniel Igo says the 31-year-old Bigos has a clean criminal record.

Text messaging while driving, hit and run, even if he did think he had not hit a person, which I doubt, driving with no license - how many ways can you write, throw away the key.

Look at all the idiots talking on their phones while driving. I'm shocked this isn't a daily event...

My first thought was to blame the driver. Which of course I do. But I also wonder why a 14 year old kid is out riding his bike at that time of night. Where are the Parents?

My son age 16 was killed when he took my car keys while I was asleep at night. Kids do those things. Don't blame the parents. They are going through something you'd better pray you never have to experience. Loss of a child. The child was not committing a crime.

Even if it was a mailbox, you would still stop to check the damage and try to inform the people whose property you damaged. He didn't stop because he panicked driving without a valid liscense, and he possibly had been drinking in which he would have had his liscence revoked indefinitely but,he probably waited to sober up and sleep off a hangover before turning himself in.How can his attorney say he dosen't have a criminal record when he is driving without a liscense-we weren't born yesterday counselor.Freakin cell phones have become quite dangerous behind the wheel.I feel for that family, sounds like they raised a good boy.Life just isn't fair, mikehendy.

What's with those who drive while yapping or texting into cellphones?

Is it their weaving, bobbing, and jinking all over the road? Nope. Is it their speed, always irksomely out of step with traffic? Nope.

The eyes have it. Are theirs on the road? Nope. Eyes vacant, their minds are miles distant.

Isn't it a wonder there aren't more disasters?

Tuning the stereo doesn't distract like a cell chat. Nor does talking on a two way radio, as do cabbies, deliverymen, and cops, to name a few. Their conversations are brief and pertinent.

Cell chats blind one's mind.

Ever experience the chilling realization, upon concluding a cell chat, you've driven miles and not seen the road? Who was driving? Disquieting, isn't it?

Enough to make one pull over before chatting? Yeah.

Text messaging
+ After midnight
+ In the dark
+ While driving a car
+ Hit-and-run
= Zero respect for human life

Zero tolerance.
Bring back stocks and public flogging.
(Then throw away the key.)

My very, very deepest condolences to the family.
