DOT hopes to solve Iway problems with signs

The state Department of Transportation has a low-tech solution to the traffic problems that coincided with the first weekday traffic on the IWay bridge.

Take a different route
.

The jam was not on the new bridge, it was a result of traffic from Route 95 south merging with Route 195 east. Frank Corrao III, DOT deputy chief engineer, wants commuters coming from the city to merge using 95 northbound, so they can drive over the IWay bridge, where traffic was light.

One lane was closed feeding into 195 eastbound so that when they merged with the lanes coming off the new bridge, they were equal to the lanes on 195 westbound.

“A lot of individuals who work in the jewelry district, Davol Square and the Rhode Island Hospital complex, they all try to go down Point Street to Wickenden Street and get on the highway there,” according to Corrao.

But they could take side streets to the Allens or Thurbers Avenues entrances, bypassing the old merge and using the new bridge, instead.

Drivers often need some help adjusting to a new traffic pattern, Corrao said, so the state will try to help by putting signs up pointing to alternate routes before tonight’s commute.

“Whenever you do a major traffic pattern change, we do expect and anticipate that there’s going to be some congestion,” Corrao said. “As people see what’s going on, they begin to change their routes or driving behavior. That plus us providing some signage, will go a long way.”

Longer term fixes include lengthening acceleration lanes on 195 East.

This is horrendous now I have to totally cut Providence out of my commute by going through Pawtucket then East Providence. Adding another 20 minutes on to my commute. I mine as well just sleep at my job and come home on the weekends.

Gee, they 've probably all left for the day at RIDOT (it's 1:25P), but I have a suggestion. RE-OPEN THE THIRD LANE ON I-195 EAST, YOU MORONS!

I try not to take 95 if I do not have to but last night I had to. I was in traffic for well over an hour on 95 S. I was not happy!! Good thing I stopped for gas before getting onto the highway! When you plan a project this huge, you have to think about all possible circumstances and what if's. Granted, unexpected things will come up, but people please; Let's use our heads and not inconvenience all commuters at the same time. We are suppose to think things through, then make a plan. Traffic was ridiculous to put it mildly. I'm sure DOT was far away from the scene and calmly watching the chaos unfold from the comfort of their homes!!

I drove by the new lane configuration on Sunday and knew it was going to be a nightmare Monday evening. Unfortunately, I was right and was stuck for well over an hour trying to get East Providence. If I could see it, why couldn't the DOT?

Frank Correo said in this morning's Projo that he didn't believe that people really were stuck in traffic last night. We pay this guy? I'd call him and set him straight, but, like Kevin said, quitting time at the DOT was a few hours ago.

The only solution is to reopen the third lane. If they can't do that they should close the new road until they can open the southbound connector.

They cut down the already slow four lanes at the beginning of 195 to two. How did they not expect this to be a huge, permanent mess? Now all the traffic from 95 South, the access ramp near Point Street (on Service Road No. 8) the Wickenden Street on-ramp, the South Water Street on-ramp and some 95 North traffic is all trying to merge into two lanes. It's a nightmare. Mark my words, it won't get better.

Why don't they have ONLY one lane coming off the Ibridge and on to 195E. Let's spread the traffic nightmare to all commuters and not just those coming from 95S to 195E
