ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- State police say two drivers weaving through traffic as they raced at high speeds on Route 95 North in Attleboro (click for map)died when their vehicles were involved in a fiery crash.

Police say both vehicles are registered in Rhode Island.

The two cars collided, then went off the highway, up an embankment and hit the concrete abutment of an Interstate 295 overpass. The cars flipped over and burst into flames.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names haven't been released pending positive identification by the medical examiner and notification of family.
The 11 a.m. crash forced the closure of the two right lanes of Interstate 95 North and the ramp from Interstate 295 North to I-95 North, causing lengthy traffic delays.

One driver was in a 2008 Nissan sedan and the other was in a 2008 Honda sedan, says a state police news release.

The two left lanes are now open on Route 95 north in Massachusetts after being closed because of a fatal car crash next exit 4, the Rhode Island Transportation Management Center said this afternoon.

The Route 95 right lane and the Route 295 north ramp leading to Route 95 north remain closed.

The incident remains under investigation.

there should be a very low tolerance for speeders weaving thru traffic on our highways (passing on the left; passing on the right). we've all seen them. they are dangerous to themselves, and dangerous to others. they should have their driver's licenses taken away from them ON THE SPOT, and have their cars towed away. (fortunately, in this case, there appears to have been no innocent bystanders hurt in this reckless, criminal, unforgivable behavior.)

What these two cars were doing happens all the time. People drive ike that constantly and it is no wonder that these accidents don't happen more often. RI and MA State Police need to show more of a presence on 95 N. and 95 S. I feel bad for the families these people leave behind and what they have to go through. hese two idiots obviously did not care about them.

This 2 car crash is tragic but not surprising given the racing and swerving observed prior to the crash. I often see this type of wreckless driving by young drivers who seem to have no regard for other travelers on the roads. Too often the vehicles involved have Rhode Island plates (just my observation) as in this case. Maybe the RI General Assembly could spend some money on educating RI's young drivers to understand that driving is a privilege and not the latest scene from a "Too Fast, Too Serious" film. Thank God that they didn't kill some else.

I agree with the people above. Too often I see drivers of all ages going at break neck speeds on the highways. I see not only small vehicles but suv's and van going like sports cars on the INDI 500. Another thing is seems that most people in Rhode Island do not know how to use the signal lights, there should be fines for that too. People switch lanes without a warning infront of you or besides you. Where are these drivers getting their drivers licences from, a ceral box?

We call that stretch of highway the "Indianapolis 900" one can never seem to go fast enough! Try to go 65, GOOD LUCK the average speed is 85 or more

It really is a shame that this happens all the time. I believe the driving test is too easy and the laws about how to drive are not very clear. I've lived for many years in Germany and despite the high speed (and they have idiots like this occasionally too), people drive following rules that make sense: no passing on the right, always use a turn signal, put on your hazards when you approach a traffic jam etc etc). Why do we drive like we have no common sense? As a native Rhode Islander that learned to drive in RI, I am still amazed at how bad we drive - even the ones traveling the speed limit. I think the police should throw away their radar guns (they are inaccurate anyway) and concentrate on safety rather than hiding behind bridges to make money. We need police presence and fines that hurt for idiot drivers.

There aren't any classes ta will prn this type of driving, unfortunately. More police presence in mrked cars patrolling the highways AND pulling over even less serious infractions may help.

I often see this myself when I am driving on the high way. I can't count how many times I am driving along and I had just looked in my rear view mirror and saw everything was normal. Then low and behold comes a couple of cars that seem to have come out from no where passing me on both sides. I thank God I make it a habbit of looking into my rear view mirror and side view mirror while I'm driving. Honestly it scares the heck out of me. My heartfelt sympthy goes out to the famlies of the two drivers who were killed.

Christine | November 1, 2007 6:21 AM link

And it's not just cars that drive this way.. it's motorcyclists that think they have some type of privelege to slide between two cars and ride along the striped lines on the road. If I see one coming up behind me, I stay put and pray they don't hit me, because its the safest thing to do

I can't agree more with the people who have posted already, but feel that we will be unable to control this type of behavior by the presence of more patrols. Even with the patrols on the highway, you could never have enough, nor cover enough highways. I don't know how old the deceased were, but there is technology that can prevent speeding. We can add computers to our cars and we can put cameras on the highways. I'm all for 'Big Brother' watching. There is such a sense of self importance among some of these people........if you ask me, most of society is an accident waiting to happen.

Rhode Island drivers are out of control. I see the same clowns on 95 Southbound every morning at 6:15 AM. The dufus in the little red car going 45 mph in the extreme left hand lane. The great big passenger truck going 75 in the extreme right hand lane (why not, nobody else uses it) and people braking when there isn't even anything in front of them. It's not just speeding....it's the whole damn culture in the state. It's all about ME!

Let's get back to the basic rule of the road. KEEP TO THE RIGHT EXCEPT WHEN PASSING! And enforce it.....that IS a law on the Massachusetts books and should be in Rhode Island too. Rhode Island drivers don't have an ounce of courtesy in them.

Mikki | November 1, 2007 9:34 AM link

I agreed. Drivers don't know the rules of the road. The drivers that stay in the left lane holding up traffic and refusing to move over... These drivers are the dangerous ones because they and doing 40 miles in that lane and other drivers cannot get by. Consequently, you have drivers passing and getting angry. Stay out of the left lane.

Sad,so sad. That's about it.I can't say any of us haven't seen drivers like this before. It's bound to happen. Just glad, I hope, that no innocent drivers was involved. Two drivers in new 2008 cars trying to show just how there car can handle. Its the commercials we see all the time with a sharp red car weaving thru traffic and how it handles be it the tire companies, the auto companies or how the shocks give you a better ride !I'm sure inmature drivers that just have no clue of what will happen "if" they lose control.Years ago, when I taught my 4 kids to drive, I remember some parents very upset that in Drivers Ed. Class they showed bloody accidents and their children had nightmares, and couldn't sleep at night ! I went to a meeting of parents and just about yelled at some mothers concerned about these bloody movies being showed. I told them I don't mind, infact, I hope my children have nightmares. At least that may give my children the chance to get home safely and have a chance of having nightmares, instead of me having nightmares because my child didn't come home. By the way, it worked for my kids, and now they are about to teach my grandchildren how to drive and will be sure they understand how to drive safely and get home to have that chance to have a nightmare about accidents. Most accidents at those speeds become bloody. They always wear there seat belts too.....SAD.....just so Sad ! !

very very tragic. Although these two people came from Rhode Island, it does NOT mean that all Rhode island drive cannot Drive. im sure there are just as many immature drivers in mass, and every other state for that matter. I do agree that more things need to be done about speed control and our of control driving. But there is no need to lash out at the State of Rhode Island for two (2) people who were acting immaturely. you know, some of us DO have courtesy. again, just a very tragic situation.

RC | November 1, 2007 5:02 PM link

Lets not forget, while a bit reckless, they were human beings. Thank god or whom ever you worship they did not hurt anyone other than themselves. Miss Gauthier was a friend of mine. I would like to know what type of insensitive fool would speak ill of the recently departed. There is no need to refer to her as an "idiot" as Mike did. Hey Mikey, go to her wake and call her an idot.

Mike Z | November 1, 2007 7:04 PM link

I am a professional truck driver in the state of RI. I agree there needs to be a stronger police presence as well as driver education and reeducation. It's obvious that seatbelts, airbags, nothing will help at crashes of these speeds. On top of the reckless driving the cell phone use by drivers needs to cease. Thakfully for most of the phone talking lane wanderer's, us professionally drivers are alert of what's going on 300yds. in front of us and 100yds. behind at all times. People fail to realize that a loaded 18wheeler has no chance of stopping at 65mph downhll and most accidents with a truck at that weight and speed will result in death. Life is too short and too precious to be wasted on something as asinine and preventable as a fatal traffic accident. Please, make an effort to respect each other on the road, pay attention, drive at a reasonable speed and leave enough room to stop between yourself and the vehicle in front.
