Changes at Channel 6 after sale

PROVIDENCE -- The general manager and news director of WLNE-TV have been replaced and veteran anchor Walter Cryan has retired as new owners try to revive the station's flagging newscasts, a station spokesman said today.

The ABC affiliate has been a perennial loser in the news ratings in Providence, lagging behind WJAR and WPRI.

Providence-based Global Broadcasting announced in the spring it would buy WLNE from Irvine, Calif.-based Freedom Communications. That deal closed Tuesday, station spokesman Jason Nye said.

"Their main goal is in improving the news product," he said.

The new owners hired Stephen Doerr in the dual role as general manager and news director. Doerr, 46, replaces General Manager Roland T. Adeszko and News Director Edwin Hart, Nye said.

Doerr most recently worked at the Dallas-based media consulting firm Audience Research and Development. Before that he was senior vice president of news programming and creative development for NBC in New York, a position he left in 2002, Nye said. He also has worked at KXAS in Dallas and WWRC in Washington.

Cryan retired Friday, Nye said. He came out of a four-year retirement in 2004 to take over the evening anchor spot at WLNE. Before that he was an anchor for 35 years at WPRI.

Correction: An ealrier version of this report incorrectly described Doerr's most recent job.

How little these people understand this market. We love and respect old friends and good gossip. Walter Cryan and Jim Hummel are the two best things that Six has going for it. Together they are a wonderful one-two punch. They are crazy to let Walter retire - although he richly deserves it. We have seen, time after time, new owners try to hire new faces, with all too predictable results. Remember when Channel 12 tried to replace Doug White with Ernie Anastos? Doug promptly went to 10 and became the most popular anchor ever. Ernie vanished.

Channel 6 is unfortunate to be in the shadow of chanel 10. I personally believe their content and on air personalities are the best in this market. Unfortunately, people default to channel 10. I have no idea why. I find their on air people to be totally inept and ingraciating.

This is very sad. Do they really think this will result in anything but driving viewers away?

Again it is the outside management making decisions for the local stations. I switched to Ch 6 when Cryan went there. So now it is time to switch back to Ch 12.....Good Luck to the new owners....

Too bad they got rid of Walter Cryan, they should have gotten rid of that clown Jim Hummell. He is a knucklehead and I wouldn't watch channel 6 with him there.

They DID NOT fire Walter Cryan. Walter was a good friend of Ed Hart (Who brought him out of retirement to work at WLNE). Walter had an "out" in his contract that allowed him to leave the station if either the News Director or GM were replaced. They were, and he left. He was only at WLNE to help out a friend, once that friend was fired he bolted. And good for him, he is far better then WLNE will ever be. I hope he ends up back at WPRI at least in a part time status. Not likely, but one can always hope!
