Carcieri to announce job cuts today

PROVIDENCE -- Governor Carcieri this afternoon will outline his plan to cut the state's workforce to rein in a projected $211-million budget deficit.

He will speak at 2 p.m. in the State Room at the State House, according to an advisory from his office.

Carcieri has said his aim is to cut $200-plus million in state spending and 1,000 state jobs.

Maybe he should start by privatizing HIS job! It's very easy for him to dictate what going to happens to other families when he's sitting pretty. I hope the people of rhode island are paying attention to what this so-called "governor" is really doing to our beloved state.

Everyone wants services available but then slams state workers. Want your streets plowed? Unemployment benefits? Good care for your elderly parents? Guess who does it. I am sick of the blame. And why balance the budget -which was just great before the election- on only the state employees?

Cut! Cut! Cut! There are too many overpaid, lazy, state workers. 1000 is not enough!

1,000? Lets start with 2,000 and go from there.

They are to valuable, Carcherry cannot run this like Old Stone. We know how he drove that in the ground. By the time his term ends, the Ocean State will be drifting at sea.

Good start in shrinking the state budget. Next step is to shrink the un-affordable salaries our public officials are getting. Any salary over $100,000 should be cut in half, in line with what a RI household makes, COMBINED!!

Did the Governor cut any part of the state police budget? Looking at the 2007 state police which show 282 personnel to include non-troopers with a budget of over $33 million is criminal extortion on the RI taxpayers.

Let me just say not all state employees are lazy and overpaid. Don't put all state employees in one basket. Maybe some employees spend to much time at donuts shops or on the side of the road those are the one the state system should really outs them instead of the people who really do work for a living. and what about the people that where in the newspaper with all that high paying and a lot of overtime??????????????

It's too bad the unions have such a hold on the state. Concessions to the unions helped put us in this mess, and it really will be difficult to get out of it. So we lay off worker A making $25/hr, he bumps worker B, who bumps worker C, who makes $15/hr. So in trying to eliminate a $25/hr job, we only save $15. Too bad we couldn't first just get rid of all the workers who abuse the system such as the infamous duo at the registry and the guy caught spending his days at the bar but still putting in overtime, and then see where we stand. Unfortunately, the unions would put up such a fuss and try to save their 'workers' it would take years to resolve. There will never be any real reform as long as the unions own the legislature.

in Looking at the previous posts , I think we are on to something. Cut pay rates to what the average Rhode Islander makes. approx $50,000.00 for a two working couple family. I would rather see cut pay than cut jobs. In many ways the jobs that are out there are needed. but the outragous pay rates are what hurting us all. Maybe Carcieri could use a good pay cut. He is working just like the rest of us. and while we are at it.. !

As a nurse, that barely has time to go to the rest room, on my 12 hour shift,I am disgusted with the union/state workers mentality. The state does not owe you a job where you can do next to nothing and have great benefits. Every one knows getting a state job is the best you can get.

Jill, you posted the same thing twice. Maybe you should have used that time to go to the bathroom. LOL

The people complaining are the same ones who consistantly vote the same way over and over again, pass all bond issues and are deserving of owning a screwed up union state

Everyone
blames either the state workers or the immigrants for all of RI problems and deficits, knowing well enough they are just been used as spacegoats by the politicians. Everyone is to blame. Americans are and have been spoiled for too long. We all like to have good, fast, efficient services without too much hassle. Americans have always been spoiled and demanding, and above all, we do not take responsibility for our past mistakes and own actions but we sure love to play the blame game. Not all state workers are lazy or overpaid, just like not all immigrants are illegal or are draining the system, BUT politicians will always be politicians here in America or anywhere in the world. Sure, cut state jobs but be prepared to suffer. you cant have it both ways.

What we really need to get out of this mess is for the legislators to realize they can't just keep spending and expect the taxpayers to keep shelling out the cash. I wish I could go to my boss and tell him he's going to give me a raise because I want to spend more money than I make. Maybe a basic economics course should be a requirement to run for office. We probably should require a course on ethics too.
