2 shootings, 1 fatal, early today in Providence

One person is dead, and another was injured after two separate shootings early this morning in Providence.

One man is dead after being shot while he was in a vehicle near 290 Ohio Ave. in the city’s Washington Park neighborhood, just after midnight, according to the Providence police.

A half hour later, another man, also 21, was shot in the left buttocks near 45 Hanover St., about two miles away. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, according to Providence Fire Chief of Communications James Taylor.

The police have not released the names of the victims, nor said whether the two shootings were related.

There's no gang war here. Move along. Nothing to see here.

Glad to know that crime is down so significantly in the capital city. Too bad it's down because the cops aren't reporting the crimes.

Has anyone noticed that the Journal is more horrified by underage drinking in Barrington than the rate at which Providence youths are killing each other????

Deborah | October 1, 2007 11:20 AM link

Why is anyone surprised by this in the neighborhoods that it is happening in and by the people doing it?

Well, my family and myself were seriously considering moving to Providence from Florida, but after seeing the kind of activity we're trying to get away from, I don't know .....

We DID move back to RI from FL. We lived in a small, safe town in FL (Stuart) and never ventured into crime ridden parts of West Palm or any part of Miami. We live in South Kingstown now and avoid going into the war zone called Providence. The farthest north we go is usually Warwick to the "BIG Box" stores.

Well of course, Deborah. The mayor of Barrington isn't running for governor and counting on the ProJo to candy coat his administration so the rest of the state thinks he's doing a good job.

Providence is out of control, and the only reason it's not even worse is the police...try dealing with those animals on a daily basis....we talk about community this and that, but it's only going to get worse....violent crime is up across the map, and providence is getting tougher and tougher.....besdies the 2 square miles downtown and parts of the east side, 80 percent of Providence is run down and Poverty stricken. Maybe if we spent more time helping out the poor instead of riding in gondolas, we could put a dent in this violence

If you're lucky enough you can see a real live daytime shooting......crime is "Down" as the kids used to say "That's Down" The mayor doesn't mean crime is down as in declining. You people are confused.

these were young people. you must get your child away from bad influences if they are not strong children - i blame the parents - you cannot work through the system, here - you cannot pray your way out of it - you cannot trust your children if they show you they are not deserving of that trust - move! get away! it is your only chance. do it today

I love the alarmists like the response from Patrick. They cower in their homes thinking the gangs are out to get them. They're not.

You can check out the statistics on the Providence Police site but they're only up to 2005. Also look at provplan.org's crime maps. One interesting aspect is that most of the major crime happens in areas that are major immigrant settlement points.

If you're a gang member, your chances of being shot or killed are higher. But the collateral damage is very low.

And the murder rate has been relatively steady over the years.

And to Donna U., come on up and look around. If you can afford it make the move. It's a beautiful city .

Look at where these incidents happen. As a police officer in the city, look at where and who are committing these crimes. That is what the PD is trying to do.

No one is asking these questions for fear of retaliation.

According to your Mayor and Police Chief, Providence is a safer city now! Thank goodness we moved - high taxes, failing schools, and Providence being a sanctuary city for illegals was enough for me to move my family out. Our prayers are for our friends who are stuck there. Corruption continues under this Mayor and the city is a mess.

Listen people murders happen every where in this country and around the world. Providence has one of the lowest murder rates for a major city around the country. So before you go pointing your finger on the city, shame on you point the finger should be pointed to yourself, and try and figure out a way to stop all these murders world wide. Look at your president first who you elected and see the example he is making. And start the blame there.

There's a shock. The Projo won't put my entry on it's blog, "We must remain liberal" and not report the news.

Too many kids watching BET and MTV ... this is providence... fight with hands not guns
