URI student stabbed at school dance

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — A University of Rhode Island student was stabbed at an on-campus dance early this morning and taken to South County Hospital with what the university described as “non-life threatening” injuries.

The incident occurred at about 1:05 a.m. in the Memorial Union building during a dance sponsored by the Cape Verdean Students Association, according to a written statement from Robert F. Drapeau, URI’s public safety director. The victim was a male, Drapeau said.

URI spokesman David Lavallee said officials are investigating what took place and expect to release more information “as the day goes on.”

As of 10:25 a.m., Lavallee said there had been no arrests as far as he knew.

“I think they’re trying to find out what happened,” he said.

uhh..
first of all..
why wasn't anybody checked for weapons of this sort at the dance in the first place??
And if I was the victim I would be suing somebody, cause this is just bull.
you guys say that this wasnt life threatning when the victim could have been killed.
Now you tell me what's NOT life threatning.

hmmmm... let's continue to have unarmed officers protect our children at URI... it's not like anything bad happens... NO! DON'T LOOK {{eyes closed}} "I'm in my happy place" "I'm in my happy place" "I'm in my happy place" "I'm in my happy place".............

So you want someone to check people at a dance for weapons....what next...lets just check everyone walking into a lunch room or better yet lets have someone checking for weapons before you walk into class....It was a dance.

Blame the person who did the stabbing instead of the school.

I don't think University officials should ban parties/dances but I do think they should assist student organizations with ensuring safety. Additionally, I believe arming security guards needs to be re-visited. Lastly, every Non-URI student needs to be checked for weapons before entering the dance.

same old bs. I feel that it is in the best interest of the university to have a unarmed police department. This way they cannot secure the area and actually catch the bad guy. Oh, by the way,why dont you find out who did this and give that poor misguided man a free college pass.sounds good to me, right Mr. Carothers.

How about we stop blaming everyone but those involved. The majority of people at these dances are not even students. There are always fights...always. This time, someone chose to escalate it. It is not the schools fault. I am sure the person that got stabbed had nothing to do with it...right?

To the person who says it was "just a dance"... you should come down to these select late-night "dances" that take place regularly... weapons, gangs, a good amount of non-students and riots that almost ALWAYS break out and spread throughout campus after they let out... the University doesn't obviously publicize this but they always happen and get downplayed... talk to the officers (sometimes from as many as five towns and the state police) that respond to them... FYI the URI officers are not security guards, they are fully-sworn police officers that go through the same academy with town/city police officers. Here's another idea: how about banning the groups that cause these problems instead of turning a blind eye... do what is done with fraternities... if you cause problems, you're done.

The comment about armed security guards??? How about they are sworn police officers that graduate the Rhode Island Police Academy and perform the same exact services that the rest of the state does and the only reason they don't don't carry weapons is because the school for some reason thinks that having an armed police department would make the school appear that it was unsafe because they need guns. There are MANY stabbings on record that occur at the University of Rhode Island for everyone's info.

It said on the news that the police may not get involved because they do not want their officers getting involved in something like this without a gun because it is to dangerous? Not get involved??? I'm a concerned parent of a URI student and this makes me mad knowing that the police can't get involved when something serious like this happens. They are police officers so why is it such a big deal to arm the police? I know a family member of a URI cop and they all graduate the police academy. Who knows what can happen if these students and non-students think they can get away with this because the police don't have guns?

Someone knows something. Kids are famous for not "ratting" out. The person who was responsible for the stabbing should be found and prosecuted or that student society should not be allowed to host any more events. Parents and students pay a lot of money for the privilege of attending college. Some kind of supervision with armed and uniformed officers should be a requirement. Even if it is just to keep the peace. Now tell me again why new URI students would want to go to these parties again?

First of all I believe that all University Police Officers (that are trained and held accountable) should be armed. This is a different world now, and you don't have to look far to find examples.....V-Tech, Columbine, and many others. Most parents try and do whats best for their children by sending them to good elementary and high schools and then when they get to college the kids are thrown into the mix with kids from all walks of life, ethnic backgrounds, and cultures. Some have criminal records, some are drug dealers, these kids rob and steal from each other ie: laptops, money or whatever is not nailed down. Universities try and make it look like the campus is the safest place in the world, but if parents want to know the truth, call the locat Police Dept. and ask a Detective what type of crime is taking place at the University. They have nothing to hide and will tell you the truth, the school has everything to lose ($$$$$$) by telling a parent the truth, and will go to great lengths to make the University look like the safest place in the world. Parents who have kids that attend Brown, J&W, RISD, URI-Prov, CCRI-Prov, call the Providence Police Detective Bureau and check out the crimes happening there, you will certainly find a much different response from the University.
