State closes down Artistic Surgical Center

The Artistic Surgical Center in East Greenwich, which offers "extreme makeovers," "breast enlargement" and "facial rejuvenation" among procedures, must cease all surgical procedures because of license and regulation violations, the state Health Department announced today.

The center, at 1567 South County Trail -- does not have a required license, its physician Curtis J. Perry does not have surgical or hospital privileges and he is letting unlicensed medical assistants administrator Versed and Ketaine without a nurse or anesthesiologist present.

According to a Health Department news release, Perry has been licensed to practice medicine in Rhode Island since 1990 and he is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties in Otolaryngology. "Additionally, he claims a certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS), a board that was created in 1986 to assist ear, nose and throat physicians to obtain additional recognition for 'their knowledge and skills.' "

Along with the aforementioned procedures, rhinoplasty, liposuction and abdominoplasty are also performed at Artistic Surgical Center, the Health Department stated.

Because Perry does not have surgical or hospital privileges at any accredited Rhode Island hospital, the Health Department said, he "is unable to assist patients for post-surgical complications in a hospital."

When Perry is away, he does not have "post-surgical coverage service" with another surgeon. "This lack of identified coverage leaves Kent Hospital and other area hospitals responsible for the respondent's post-surgical complications."

Why does the RI Dept.of Health, Medical Licensing board have him, as of 9/27/07, listed as Board Certified Plastic Surgeon (secondary specialty) and privileges at Kent Hospital? Does the state know what they're doing? On one hand they're making claims against him, on the other, his license information says something different.

I am heart sick to hear what is happening to Dr. Perry. I have the utmost respect for Dr. Perry as a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon. His staff have always been professional as well. I cannot understand why the RI Dept. of Health is closing his practice down. One of the main reasons I selected Dr. Perry was his ability to provide confidential out-patient plactic surgery procedures as opposed having to go to a hospital. His building is beautiful, clean, well-kempt and most professional looking. I would have never have wanted to go to a hospital. I never had any post-operative difficulties although it is understandable that anything can happen even if you do select to have a procedure done in a hospital. I have known people including a sibling who developed infections post surgery even when it was done in a hospital! I think the Health Dept. needs to be focusing on more imperative issues than to destroy a doctor's reputation and life because he does not wish to have surgical or medical privilegs to Kent Hosptial. This is just going to lead up to greedy people looking for an opportunity to sue to easy money.

I have been a patient of Dr. Perry's for a few years, and I believe that he is the most skilled, and talented doctor. I have the utmost respect for him, and hope that everything turns out in his favor, as I will continue to support him!

I was featured as one of his RI Extreme Makeover patients. I am sick to hear of this happening. I cannot believe this is going on. I had multiple procedures by him and the outcome was fantastic...I am shocked and never thought for a moment he did not have proper licenses. IN business you have to have these things in place. I support his work, but that is so very wrong if he was practicing knowing he did not have these licenses. My life was in his hands and hoping for a good result, I am now worried....I hope all turns well in his favor.

Are you people crazy the man lied about his credentials. He is not even a plastic surgeon and he deserves everything that he gets. He should have his license taken away permanently. I cannot imagine how many lives he has ruined. His office is unlicensed and all you people braggin about how well ur surgery came out are very lucky u did not die on his operating table.

my surgery came out horrible,I'm very uncomfortable and disfigured in the face. Of course he would take extra time for someone who he would feature on tv, you are one of the lucky ones.

From my understanding, Dr. Perry was liscensed. And it is ludacris for people to think any of this was intentional. As we all know laws change and it was a licensure problem with the facility not with Dr. Perry's personal licensure! I think it is really sad that some people will post a comment against him especially when they can't even say who they are! If you have something bad and wrong to say then you should at least state your name. Do you really think a doctor who knew he wasn't licensed would be doing Extreme Makeover and as much advertising as he was, come on!!

why doesn't the newspapers follow up on Doctor Curtis Perry?
There are some of us who would like to find out if there's a lawyer taking care of this or some form of support for all of Perry's unhappy victims. Is there someone we can get in touch with? State board of health should be responsible also for letting this go on for so long. We have called the state board and they won't give out any information.
