Naval Station Newport has a new commander

NEWPORT -- A new commander has taken charge of Naval Station Newport.

A Navy spokeswoman says Captain Michel Poirier has assumed command of the base.

He's a 1983 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and arrived at the local base after a stint on the staff of the chief of naval operations.

Poirier also served aboard five submarines, including during two deployments to support military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He replaces Captain Todd Malloy, who's joining the staff at the Command Leadership School.

This does not make any sense at all. All the training, time, and money invested in this officer for submarine duty and he's in charge of a small base?

Phyllis, I'm assuming you have NO idea how the military works or you wouldn't have piped up with your ignorant complaint.

It's called a "Thank You". He did MORE than his time stuffed in the sardine can underwater for eight months at a time. Now it's high time for him to sit back and run a small base and get ready for retirement. He's been a warrior and a hero. Now it's his turn to mold those coming up through the ranks.

So please go back to your armchair quarterbacking of local politics and leave the military stuff to those that know what they're talking about, okay?
