Bicyclist struck, killed on Route 1, Charlestown

CHARLESTOWN -- A male bicyclist was struck and killed late this afternoon by an SUV as the rider was traveling in the breakdown lane on Route 1 south, police said.

The accident occurred between Kings Factory Road and Prosser Trail. Police did not yet know why a gray SUV moved into the breakdown lane, striking the bicyclist.

The bicyclist was wearing a helmet but was thrown from the bicycle.

The medical examiner has been on scene, and traffic was being diverted.

The female driver of the car was taken to the Westerly Hospital, but she is not believed to have serious injuries.

Frank was a fine, fine human being. His passing reflects a great loss for Matunuck and for our society, writ large.

She was probably trying to avoid the traffic backup. We see it all the time. It's just too bad everyone is in such a rush. This poor man & his family. Just awful!

Slow the heck down, people! When you are driving a 2 ton piece of steal at 60+ miles an hour you have a responsibility to GET OFF THE PHONE, Pay attention, stay in your lane and SLOW DOWN!!

We have an obesity problem in this country and a big part of it is the disdane we have for pedestrians, runners, and biclyclists - that is people who excercise. Cars do no own the road - that is the law. Slow down, pay attention, and share the road.
