Providence patrolman pleads not guilty in alleged rape

Providence Patrolman Marcus Huffman, left, is arraigned in Superior Court.
PROVIDENCE – At Patrolman Marcus Huffman's arraignment this morning, prosecutors said they found his semen on the boxer shorts of a teenage female that he is accused of raping.

The 13-year veteran of the police force pleaded not guilty to first-degree sexual assault in Superior Court this morning.

“I’m confident we will successfully refute the charges,” his lawyer, Raymond Angell, said.

Prosecutors say Huffman encountered the 19-year-old outside of Platforms Dance Club where a bouncer had denied her entrance because she seemed intoxicated.

Special Assistant Attorney General Erik B. Wallin said a video shows them entering the District Two police substation on Gordon Avenue together, and shows him exiting alone. She is seen leaving later, alone.

In what Wallin called “a cruel irony,” when the alleged victim went to a relative's home and called the police to report that she had been raped, Huffman was the responding officer.

Prosecutors asked for bail to be set at $30,000 with surety, however Judge Daniel A. Procaccini set it at $50,000 with surety.

Huffman faces first-degree sexual assault, which carries a minimum sentence 10 years in prison. (Correction: The initial version of this report described this as the maximum sentence.)

I have known this young man for a long time. I pray to GOD he is innocent of these charges. I pray for his wife, children and family.

What a waste of 13 years. How did he get on the force in the first place. "A who you know" thing I guess? I was on the job in the mid 80's and let go for a stupid misdeminor charge that I really had nothing to do with. But the fear that they put into me. I had no choice, I quit. Best thing that could of happened. (looking back) But these guys are committing violations on top of violations and still stay on the job. RI politics I'll never understand it?

I, as we all are fully aware that every case is different and should be handled as such. I am also aware that you can't make a judgement based on what you read in the press, or hear on the electronic news media.
Give the accused his day in court & assume he is innocent until proven otherwise. Lastly, I am not comparing the two cases in any fashion, but they do have similar circumstances...Remember the Duke University travesty ??

Who cares WHAT she was wearing! If it IS his semen on her garment, he's toast! No sympathy from me. RI cops think they can get away with ANYTHING!!! It's really too bad.

Young females wear boxer shorts and have for years now. It's a fashion trend.

Newporter | August 22, 2007 2:44 PM link

My only comment to those whom are concerned at what she was wearing is "who cares"!!! the point is this girl alleges she has had something wrongfully done to her by an official and it needs to be dealt with. I wear boxer shorts? So what does that mean I'm asking to be raped? Save it! I've also known Markus for a very long time and he is a great guy to me but sadly enough I don't put it past nobody...we all would like to think that our family and friends wouldn't do things such as murder or rape but "think to yourself" in any situation.... it can easily happen whether it was intentional or not....don't judge...leave it to the judge!

As a side bar,It came up in a conversation about this case today,Why don't we have steriod testing for police officers. It is a big scandal every where else. I know that just about everyone can remember seeing police officers that were so jacked that they scared you just by looking at you. They may think it helps them do their jobs, but it pushes some way over the edge. hopefully, justice will prevail in this case, but all too often the officers code prevails. Even with the video.

Give Him what he deserves...YEARS IN JAIL...make him suffer for what he did to that poor girl!!if it was someone else they would be making them spend years in jail, but because he's a police officer he can get away with it...i just don't think it's right!

Why are ppl worried about what she was wearing. I see girls all the time with boxer shorts. ppl need to be worried about cops who are cruel and think that they can do what ever they want to the citizens of Providence. Providence cops have to be the worst cops around. Especially these new cops who think they know the streets of providence, most of them dont even live here. I hope this cop gets what he deserves. hopefully justice will proveil.

I'm not sure how the steroid comment is releveant but its not just in police work. At the ACI, steriods are easy available in the gyms provided within the secure facilities. The weight rooms are maintained by the Union through the rank and file's deduction of union dues. I know because I work there....

This cop should get the maximum sentence. I know other Providence offiers and former officers who indicsted to me that this cop has done this before and has been tried before on similar charges. He was found innocent previously. However how many coincidences cant this guy have. Fire hime and I hope the court sends him to jail for a long time. I hope some big guy in jail does the same thing to him that he did to this girl.

I think it is an absolute travesty... what happened to this young lady. I certainly hope they make this animal pay. He should be looked up in a cage with the rest of the prison inmates. What a trajedy.

Judging from the comments on this page most of you have never heard of the US Constitution and its accompanying Bill of Rights. In case any of you/us are ever in any legal trouble let me remind you... 'everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty'.

Not withstanding that, if this guy is guilty it will be interesting to see if the old Blue Line stands behind him.
