Bakery owner: Thermostat may be behind fire / Photo

This photo shows fire damage to the back of the bakery. A house rented by the family next door was saved.

JOHNSTON – The owner of D. Palmieri's Bakery, which was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning, said today he believes a malfunctioning thermostat on an oven caused the fire.

Stephen Palmieri, who has owned the bakery for 36 years, said the oven was getting hotter and hotter early yesterday morning and employees could not get the temperature to go down. He said an employee believes he turned the oven down or off but it still wasn’t cooling off.

Palmieri said today that he plans to rebuild on the same site. He said the bakery, which was famous for its pizzas and spinach pies, was insured.

Prior to the fire, a two-story blue building with blue awnings housed the popular bakery. Now, Palmieri’s is little more than a foundation with just one story of outer walls still standing, filled in with debris. A backhoe was digging through the rubble earlier today.

Your Turn: What will you miss most while Palmieri's is closed?

The pizza strips and the spinach pies. Grew up in Johnston. Now live in Fla. Always load up on pizza everytime I am back in town. They don't know what pizza w/ no cheese is here in Fla. "If they rebuilt it I will come."

No trip back to RI is complete without getting
some D. Palmieri's strip pizza. Just mentioning
it brings back fond memories of ballgames,
holidays and family gatherings complete with
their pizza strips which are unique to RI and
best in the state. Good luck rebuilding.

To The D Palmieri Family,

First of all I am so happy that I won't miss any of your wonderful faces. I am thankful that everyone is safe and well!!

While you rebuild, I will miss-
Ordering Kelly's plain ham sandwich on a soft roll with nothing else...

I will miss your pizza... What will I bring to parties?

I will miss your kindness...

I will miss the chicken wings baked with rosemary...

I will miss stopping by and talking with Mary, Sean, Stephen, Chris, Evelyn, Sue, Gabe, Eric, Young Steve, Mr. T and so on and so on...

I will miss how good it smelled...

I won't miss the extra calories!!!

I look forward to the unveiling of new D'Palmieri's Bakery and the wonderful new memories we will make but never forgetting the old ones that I am sure we will all cherish.

I extend my prayers, love and yes I will work on Christmas Eve!!

Hello, from Virginia Beach. I come home to RI several times a year and I always visit Palmieri's. In fact I was in there several times over 4th of July week including 7:30am the morning I drove back to VA. No trip to RI is complete without bringing home food from Palmieri's! I was shocked when I got my 1st phone call about the fire. I thought my family was pulling my leg. I got an email and I thought, "great, there all in on it". Then I thought about it - they love Palmieri's just as much as I do and they would not joke about something that serious. So I went on line to projo.com to see for myself. It wasn't “real” until I saw this article with the picture.

Palmieri's has been around for as long as I can remember. I remember when I was a kid, the first time my Mom let me walk there by myself - the independence I felt! No pizza strip ever tasted so good!

I am so glad to see that you plan to rebuild. Know that so many people near and far love your food and the people that work there. We wish you all the best and we will see you again soon!

I will miss picking up lunch for all my colleagues at work every week and I may even miss working on Sunday's. Although I already told Stephen I had two weeks left to work so I will put in my time in the new building - and I'm looking forward to it! Thank God every is safe - that's the most important thing. If you need anything, you know where to find me. Love Margie

This New Jersey family will temporarily miss your great "eggplant pizza" and other tasty pastry and pizza. Thank God everyone is safe and that no one was seriously injured in the fire. To Steven, Sue and the boys as well as Mary, Sean and all the workers-look forward, count your blessings and good things will follow.

I grew up within walking distance to Palmieri's and now live in NH. Everytime I come home, I load up on pizza and spinach pies. I have gotten my NH friends to love it as well. Good luck with the rebuilding...it's worth it!
