2 injured in Smithfield motorcycle crash

SMITHFIELD – A Massachusetts motorcyclist is undergoing emergency surgery this morning at Rhode Island Hospital and his passenger is in fair condition after a two-vehicle crash shortly after 11 p.m. last night.

James Rempelakis, 42, of Agorista Lane in Norton, Mass., was traveling south in the area of 970 Douglas Pike last night with passenger Theresa Goddard, 34, of Reservoir Street in Norton. A Pawtucket resident – Kayla Cummings, 20, of Knowles Street – was driving a small car north on the road and attempted a left turn into adjacent plaza. The vehicles collided, according to Smithfield Capt. Robert W. Van Nieuwenhuyze.

An accident reconstruction team is still investigating the crash. It appears that alcohol was not a factor, according to the police.

Both people on the motorcycle appear to have been wearing helmets, the police said.

Please say a prayer for my brother-in-law, Jim.
Drs. amputated his leg below the knee during this surgery. He faces many more surgeries to rebuild his shattered thigh bones...

Jim has been moved from the trauma ICU. He has had a total of 3 surgeries since the accident. There are more to come....The Good Samaritan has come forward. We believe he saved Jim's life that night! In the interest of his privacy I will not name him, but he is our Hero and we are eternally grateful. Please continue to remember Jim in your prayers. Consider donating blood in his honor - it may save the life of someone YOU Love!

My brother Jim is doing good. By the end of the week he will have had 5 surgeries and should be done. His spirits are up and he is ready to move on with his life, as difficult as it will be. I have seen a huge effort of support and help from family, friends and strangers (Hero) THANK YOU ALL!!!

Hello. My friends and I work at a restaurant in the plaza where the accident happened. We actually were the first ones at the scene. I stayed with Jim and talked to him and hugged him until the rescue got there and i have been wondering about how he was doing ever since. I'm so sorry that happened to both of them. Please know that there were a lot of people trying to help and praying for him that night and who also have continued to do so. Sincerely, Erin
