Catholic rights head decries Easter bunny ban

Tiverton's decision to ban the Easter Bunny from school events isn't sitting well with the head of a national Catholic civil rights organization.

As reported in a Journal story today, schools Supt. William Rearick said he decided to remove the word "Easter" from upcoming school events following a complaint from the School Committee. And rather than a visit from the Easter Bunny this weekend, attendees at a middle school craft fair will see Peter Rabbit instead.

Today, Bill Donohue, president of the New York-based Catholic League, had some fun in releasing a sarcastic response:

"It is unconscionable that in this day and age Supt. William Rearick would choose to honor a thief," Donohue said. "As every schoolchild knows, Peter Rabbit stole from Mr. McGregor's garden. To now hold him up as a role model to impressionable youngsters sends the wrong signal. At the very least, grief counselors should be dispatched to tomorrow's event."

Donohue continued: "There is also a more serious matter going on. The event smacks of sexism: Peter Rabbit had three sisters -- Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail -- and there is no historical record of them ever having committed a crime. So why were they passed over? Looks like the glass ceiling is still in place."

Donohue then urges "everyone to register their outrage" by e-mailing Rearick and providing his address.

The Catholic League is a national organization headquartered in New York. A civil rights watchdog organization since 1973, it is not officially affiliated with the Catholic Church, according to a spokeswoman.

Your turn: React to the ban on the word "Easter" and the bunny

The School Committee should get rid of rabbits entirely and include a showing of THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST! Alas, this is public education, which is socialistic and heathen in its very nature.

Ah, yes, the "Catholic League", the group which pickets outside Orthodox synagogues in New York City protesting the lack of crucifixes and eucharistic symbols.

Ya know, I don’t really care if they hold an Easter Egg hunt or not. But if they are going to rename Easter Eggs to Spring Eggs or Christmas Trees to Holiday Trees so that won’t offend anyone, the why the frig do they hold the event!? If you don’t like the terms EASTER or CHRISTMAS, then come up with your own secular tradition!! Don’t take our traditions and rename them! By removing EASTER or CHRISTMAS from our language you are offending ME!

Hate to break it to you Kal, but that is how christian traditions started. By taking and renaming pagan ones. Get a clue.

What gets me is the people that are offended by "Christmas" or "Easter" don't seem to have a problem taking the holidays off from work! You know, there is a lot out there that offends me, television shows and written publications depicting homosexuality, sexual promiscuity and drug use, but I recognize that as an Americans we have certain rights including the freedom of speech and religous freedom. 85% of the people in this country believe in God; why are we allowing the remaining 15% to call the shots? For those that are offended by Christianity, remember that this country was founded on it's principles; if you don't like it, go elsewhere!!

This country was founded on the Constitution, the BIll of Rights, not Christianity. The Constitution gives Christians their right to have their religion without government interference; it also gives others the right to have theirs. You'd be hootin' and hollerin' if people of other faiths had their celebrations constantly on display in the 'public square.'

What does a bunny have to do with a resurrection anyway? Give the bunny his own day of celebration, if it's for the kids, as you say.

I say, rename the Superintendent. Or better yet, name someone who has half a brain. Why can't these guys leave Christianity alone? And I would say the same thing if they were picking on any other religion. They never seem to try to be politically correct with Judaism or Islam or Buddhism. It's only Christianity that has its symbols taken down, its religious holidays renamed. Give us a break.

So, is Rearick willing to give up his background and traditions in "an attempt to be conscious of other people's backgrounds and traditions."

If so, then any entity that associates with Rearick should extend the same level of relationship and give up their background and traditions in "an attempt to be conscious of other people's backgrounds and traditions." Follow this to it's logical conclusion and there will be no more backgrounds and traditions to be conscious of. Is this the goal?

If not, then Rearick is simply giving up the backgrounds and traditions of those he "superintends over." If this is the case, then Rearick is practicing totalitarianism, "a centralized government that does not tolerate parties of differing opinion and that exercises dictatorial control over many aspects of life, " In time Rearick will have to require that all entities he "superintends over" give up their background and traditions. This will have to be done to legitimize his decision making process. Those who acquiesce, will follow blindly. Those who refuse to do so will challenge his authority. The resulting conflict resolution could take on many forms, but there will be either one of two results. Rearick loses his power or retains it.

How ignorant is William Rearick that he bans a Pagan symbol thinking it's a relgious symbol. Not only should he get his facts straight, it's concerning how many other issues he has delt with that he doesn't even know the full story. Is he really that ignorant or is he a relgious zelot trying to impose his beliefs on ours?
