Talk-show icon Arlene Violet fired

Arlene Violet, a talk-radio icon in Rhode Island, has been let go by her station, WHJJ-AM (920) after more than 16 years on the air. Her last day on the air will be tomorrow.

She will be replaced Monday in her 3 to 6 p.m. time slot by a syndicated program featuring conservative commentator Sean Hannity.

Violet, a former Catholic nun and Rhode Island attorney general from 1985 to 1987, announced her departure to her audience on her show this afternoon.

She described it as “a business decision” on the part of the station, part of the Clear Channel Communications, which is in the process of being sold to two private equity groups. “It’s a fact of life when there’s a change. . . it’s a business decision, they cut to the bottom line,” she said.

The BEST news I ever heard. This decision is 16 years too late in my opinion. Mr. Hannity will be a breath of fresh air insead of AHHHHLEEENS HOT air!

Well, that sucks. Clear Channel is already censoring political opinions they don't agree with, recollect their forbidding all their stations to play the Dixie Chicks after one of the latter spoke out about our idiot Prez.

Let's hope Arlene goes on to a better employer.

And with the departure of Arlene, we'll be rid of yet another purveyor of GEEZER RADIO.

Next up, Dave Barber...

I'm sorry to see Arlene go. It is a sad day for RI. Another example of how local media outlets, especially the larger, don't get this market. These national shows aren't going to sell against any station with a local host. I'm going to listen on Monday and forward letters to any local advertisers that I won't be shopping or buying their services if they prefer national talk shows over local issues.
This is a great chance for one of the other stations to step up to talk radio. Just think, John Depetro 10-1, Mary Ann Sorentino from 1-3 and Arlene back on from 3-6. If some radio station can do it you've got me listening. I'm not interested in national issues, we get enough of that in the paper and on tv.
Good luck Arlene and thanks for all the local talk!!!

Arlene violet has always been a class act. She has made Rhode Islanders proud to be represented by such a knowledgeable up standing person. I know she will be back, because of popular demand.

WHJJ went from a refreshing oasis of thinking peolple's talk radio to (yet another) platform for right wing nuts. The loss of Ms. Violet is awful!! I hope she's doing something satisfying to her now.
