March today in Providence for immigrants' rights

As immigrant groups nationwide plan rallies today, about 10 local groups plan to march in Providence from the Price Rite at 80 Manton Ave., to the Tabernacle Baptist Church, at 134 Bridgham St.

The groups expect to meet at 4:30 p.m. at the Price Rite and begin marching to the church around 5 p.m., said Juan Garcia, a local community organizer with the group Committee of Immigrants in Action.

At the church, organizers plan to hold a public forum around 5:40 p.m. to explain what’s happening on the national level and what it would take to implement immigration changes in Washington, he said. Organizers expect a diverse mix of people and plan to speak in Spanish and English, he said.

Groups are calling for health insurance for their children, access to college, workers' rights, "legalization, not criminalization," drivers' licenses and an end to the high costs of sending money home.

National and local groups are planning the next big action for May 1, Garcia said.

Become a citizen legally. Then you can talk about rights. These people are here illegally and they want to be treated better than those who were born here as citizens. The United States has an immigration policy. Millions of people have become citizens legally. Why is it now we must allow the current influx immediate citizenship? I don't discount the enormous benefit to the country as a whole by their hard work but everything about their existence in this country breaks laws.

First step they make into the country is to break our laws by entering illegally. They obtain jobs and either don't pay income taxes or steal SSN's and commit identity fraud. They drive without drivers licenses and insurance. They disproprotionaly use our medical facilities and lack the funds necessary to pay for the services. We already have millions of US citizens who are unemployed, homeless, lack proper education, lack proper medical care. Why must we ignore them for the people from other countries who have decided the US OWES them a better life. Play by the rules and perhaps you'll get one. Otherwise go back to your own country and make it a better place. That's exactly what our ancestors did.

Once you are a citizen, you have rights. The point is that illegal immigrants - like black people and women before them - are denied the rights that citizens have. They want to EARN a PATH to citizenship. And any self-respecting American who loves our flag and our country will not allow the kind of exploitation and oppression that is currently happening with immigrants.

Did Roger Williams "break the law" when he came here?

Hey----SOLUTION : Just take away ALL the FREE benefits we give the crimmigrants---food, housing, hospital and medical, education-----then KEEP these things away and see how fast they run of of RI to another give away haven. We should be swimming in a money surplus , given our high taxes on EVERYTHING is this " state". SELF-DEPORTATION is the way to go---cut out the freebies that they come in here for !!! NOW!!!!!!!!!

I agree with every word of posting of "John Smith". I thought these laws and ideals were cut in stone - and common sense says we have to protect them.

Not sure what you mean by Earning a path to citizenship. People who come to this country with the intention of making a better life for themselves and followin our laws - FINE. Those who want it handed to them simply for working back-breaking jobs - NO. Follow our immigration policies or leave.

Did Roger Williams break teh law when he came here? No, no US immigration policy then. We are a nation of laws. Why should new arrivals be exempted? To all of those who want the illegals here I suggest you do the following: Open up your house, let them live with you, and you can pay their way. I don't want my tax dollars going to people who ignore our laws and are only interested in exploiting the blind bleeding-heart types in this country that think we owe the world something just because we're a prosperous nation.

Eventually, if the liberal attitudes prevail the people who presently enjoy the majority in this country will become the minority. Hopefully the present minorities will be as kind to us then as we've been to them. Although it's probably not warranted, after all, every caucasion is inherently evil, right?

First of all in case any of you, which I have no doubt in my mind are all white, didn't know hispanic businesses in RI have brought in an approximate 3 million dollars into RI. Secondly do not forget where you came from because if you really look into all of your roots we are all immigrants, Portuguese, Italians, greeks, Irish, German, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Guatemalan, Mexican must I continue mentioning!?!?!?!? Mr. Smith people driving illegally, criminals, identity fraud are in every shape, color and form. Do not speak about a subject you know nothing about. 97% of people that are arrested are citizens and not illegal immigrants. Maybe it's the citizens we should start blaming for the poor economy. The so called "RED", call the Dept. of Human Services and see what percentage they have in housing, welfare and free medical services so that you may educate yourself. You cannot apply or even consider any of these services without being a citizen. I am a citizen of the United States and an extreme proud one at that. Just remember this, regardless of what anyone says, we are all equal in God's eyes. God bless you all, and may God continue blessing the WORLD!!!
