Big turnout for immigrants' rights march in Providence

PROVIDENCE -- Carrying signs and chanting, hundreds, and possibly thousands, of people gathered late this afternoon for a pro-immigration march through the city's west side.

The loud, but peaceful, gathering moved from Olneyville to the Dexter Training Grounds near the Armory, where organizers currently are giving speeches to the huge group.

The rally snarled traffic during the late afternoon as marchers clogged the roadways for nearly an hour.

Similar protests are being held across the country today, as immigration advocates rally for legislation that would help illegal aliens to become legal. There are an estimated 11 million illegal aliens living in the United States, with thousands of them in Providence.

as a LEGAL immigrant, I can assure you I had plenty of rights. Not only do ILLEGAL immigrants have no respect for the laws of the United States, but apparently even less respect for their fellow countrymen who are going through the immigration the right way.

Perhaps we should take a page from Mexican Law wherein it is a FELONY to be an illegal alien punishable by one year in jail !!!

Sometime LEGAL immigrants forget where they came from. I am sure that they still have family members who are ILLEGAL and instead of them helping their loved ones it seems like they don't care any more because they are legal and that's all that matters. I am a LEGAL immigrant now but I was brought to this country in 1988 ILLEGALLY when I was only 3 years old. I was raised in Rhode Island and I went to Classical High School and graduated in 2003 and I became a LEGAL resident in 2003.We are not being heard or being given a fair chance. We are all immigrants, Irish, French, Italian, Mexican etc. Some people have this misunderstood it's not just the Mexicans or the Central- Americans , it's all of us fighting for our rights. Where did your parents come from? Or your grandparents? Think about that.We are not felons or thiefs, we just want to work legally, file our taxes every year and have our children go to college and be of positive use to the US. I agree with having background checks done and paying back taxes, but just give us a chance to show you what we are all about.

It is very sad that a country with a society based on immigration in all aspects, wants to suddenly sweep out all of those who are searching for an opportunity to have a piece of the american dream. Talk about doing things the right way, what in politics is done the right way. Has anyone thought of that, don't lie to yourselves. I would agree that those who are illegal immigrants and even those who are legal residents already, that comit any type of felony, serious actions should be followed by the authorities. Through the years instead of educating ourselves and learn from history, we have become more stubborn and selfish. Is that supposed to be the better tomorrow we so talk about today.......

Americans, for the most part, do not have a problem with LEGAL immigration, which is what the country was based on. Where the problem lies is with those who come her ILLEGALLY, which is a crime in and of itself, and then DEMAND rights. If you want the rights afforded citizens of the United States, then do things right and legally. Allowing them to suddenly become citizens is condoning the breaking of the law and that should never happen for without laws we have anarchy and mess that they left behind in their country. Also, please at least make an effort to learn the language that is spoken here and don't demand that we speak and provide translation into YOUR language. Take a few classes - in America English should be FIRST, not taught as a "second language". Assimialte yourselves into OUR culture, do not expect us to become you - our ancestors did not expect this prima dona treatment when they came her LEGALLY many years ago - they learned the language and customs and blended into the United States - you should do the same.

To come to the U.S. by breaking the law is a slap in the face of those who jumped through the hoops and crossed every T and dotted every I. If you want sympathy from the average American then quit carrying mexican flags. If the mexican flag is so important then go back to mexico and wave it.
