NORTH SMITHFIELD -- Tomorrow evening's ribbon cutting for the town's $30 million middle school has been postponed because of a problem with part of the school's sprinkler system, school officials said.

The Wednesday, Sept. 3, opening of school for students will not be affected.

The ceremonies were set for 7 p.m. but School Committee Chairman Robert Lafleur said the motor for the school's sprinkler system broke down and had to be repaired. School officials had planned tours of the building for those attending, but Lafleur said the state fire code would not allow the building to be open to the public without a fully functioning sprinkler system.

The new parts are expected to be installed by sometime Friday, Lafleur said. That is soon enough for school to open but not for the ceremony.

Student schedules may be picked up at North Smithfield High School, next door to the middle school, between 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. today through Friday, as well as from 5-7 p.m. tomorrow. Students will be introduced to the building upon arrival to school on Sept. 3.
