May Day celebrated with beans

fava&pecorino.JPG
Yesterday was the first of May - a normal Monday for some cultures but for Italy, a day off of work and a day to eat raw beans and cheese.

While America celebrates Labor Day in September, the first of May is the official date for International Workers' Day. Thus, the Italians enjoy a 3-day weekend (usually spent in the country for the city-dwellers) and all stores and markets close.

Well, not all markets. Road-side stands are set up selling fave (what I call fava-beans). After lunch, the Italians sit around the table and break into the raw vegetable. They pick out the small beans and eat them either whole or squeeze out the inside. In Rome, the beans are accompanied with pecorino cheese.
