American band meets Roman soccer
I never did mention the outcome of that soccer game from two posts ago...

Roma won - not only that game but the Roma-Lazio derby a week later. Fans went crazy and were cheering in the streets, honking horns, and even streaking in Piazza Navona (oh yes, it was quite a sight). Through it all one thing was constantly being sung: the bass-line of "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes.
Why? When Roma played in Belgium two Sundays ago, the competing team began singing this tune after the first half of the game. The Roma fans - wanting to insult and challenge the other team's fans - sang it back louder. Since then this has become the theme song for a.s. Roma. Morning radio shows call up the soccer players at home and ask them to sing it for a laugh. This morning, outside my window, I heard someone whistling it.
The best part is, most of the Romans that I have talked to have no clue who the White Stripes are.

It's quite curious how the most majestic, traditional and beautiful cultures in the world sap things from us Americans. We honestly have nothing to offer in comparison to the beauty that is Italy.
Although, the White Stripes are quite choice.

Forza Roma, NO ALLA VOSTRA GUERRA!

Ironically, this American girl spent the 4th of July celebrating Italy and this this European obsession we call soccer. My girlfriend and I packed a red wine/ nutella picnic and followed the crowd to Circo Massimo to find out what this football thang was all about. 30,000 people gathered in a dusty field, one giant screen, throw in some ancient ruins for scenery (um....quite possibly the coolest thing I have ever seen) The winning celebration turned into a (for lack of a better term) "tailgating party." Italians on Vespas and jam packed in Euro-clown cars inched by us chanting "Italy" and singing the first 3 bars of Seven Nation Army....... Wha??? "WHY IS EVERYBODY SINGING THE WHITE STRIPES?" So, Kelsea Thank you for the explanation. You will find me back home in a Manhattan pub this weekend watching the France-Italy game (Sigh). I will be the impostor sporting my Italy tiny tee purchased at the airport kiosk. Hell, maybe I'll throw a Euro in the ol' jukebox and play the White Strips for Italy!

Perfect, Kelsea.
I'm wondering now for several weeks why the Italian fans sing the refrain of 7 nation army!? Now I got the answer!
It was a perfect world cup organized by brilliant people and more friendly German folks ;) I will miss the atmosphere, but maybe it will last in our country and change the point of view people got of Germany? BTW there were nearly 300,000 people at Circo Massimo when the Italian team arrived in Rome.
@Laura - you'll seem to be done quite well ;)
Forza fratelli, forza Italia

Thanks for the explanation! I just got back from Italy on Sunday and had the opportunity to be in Florence the preceding Sunday to watch the World Cup final game between Italia and France. I hadn't heard anyone chant the White Stripes song before the game was over, but the streets were flooded with it after the victory! I got a lot of cheers from the locals when I sang the actual lyrics, but no one could tell me why they were chanting it. Anyway, that night was one of our group's best memories of Italy!

ok im just a random on this as i just came across it but wow hearing everyone else's experiences of being in italy for the finals of the world cup has made me want to share my experiences too!!
i was fortunate enough to be in cinque terre- vernazza for the finals and man was it insane!!! and i too found myself amongst the locals screaming the tune of the white stripes..and then having it constantly stuck in my head!!
the night was one of the best things i have experienced..being able to celebrate with the locals whilst dancing and having fire crackers go off your feet is an unforgettable experieence!! being an australian i was ever so upset when i was watching the aussie vs italy semis game in rome when us australians lost (yes we did get alot of crap from the italians on our walk home as we were wearing our aussie jerseys in central rome!!!)however, i am now glad the italians beat us as we got to expereince first hand the italian celebrations for the finals!!!!
viva italia!!

Good job kelsea or whoever found out about this chanting thing. As I heard the italian chants all over tv, the chant sounded like whites stripes I just didn't see how or why the italians would use that as their national chant or victory chant. Nonetheless, the european clubs teams all over europe are huming this tune now. I guess it catchy for the soccer fan.

Seven Nation Army: The World Cup Champion must play seven countries. Italy played Ghana, USA, Czech Republic, Australia, Ukraine, Germany, and France.
The White Stripes are from industrial, democrat leaning Detroit. Believing they symbolize "America", or somehow represent general US foreign policy, is absurd.
