Hendricken had a taken a 6-0 lead with 12 seconds to go in the first half on Matt Brown's 90-yard punt return.

St. Raphael was driving for the tying TD in the fourth quarter when the Hawks recovered a Saints fumble on their own 2-yard line. Unable to make a first down, they took an intentional safety, cutting their lead to 6-2, to get the free kick -- with a strong wind at their backs -- from the 20-yard line rather than having to punt from their own end zone.

But Monk returned to the free kick 73 yards to the Hendricken 2. Peter Micali scored the game-winning touchdown from there.

BY ROBERT LEE
Journal Sports Writer

PROVIDENCE – Two of Rhode Island’s best high school volleyball teams went toe-to-toe Tuesday night at Classical.

When the smoke cleared and the dust settled, Classical had stunned the defending state champion North Kingstown Skippers, 3-1, in a Division I crossover match to improve to 3-0 and hand North Kingstown (2-1) its first loss of the season.

''They think that they won the state championship,” Classical coach Samboeun Gee said of her team after Classical’s 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, and 25-23 victory. “It’s not just because North Kingstown won the state championship last year, it’s because they are an incredible team. North Kingstown, all-around, is a solid team and the fact that we won really helped our confidence. I just hope we continue to play as good as we did tonight.”

The loss was only North Kingstown’s second in more than a year. The Skippers were 20-1 last season but they graduated All-Staters Michelle Johnson and Katie DeJesus, and senior floor leader Kelsey White (injured) did not play. North Kingstown coach Brian Garrepy said it will take a few weeks for the young Skippers to mesh together.

First team All-State selection Sam Andreozzi is back to lead the Skippers' offense, and she, along with middle blockers Colleen Bailey and Casey Whitehead did an excellent job slowing down Classical’s top two hitters – returning first team All-Stater Jhokania De Los Santos, and Brennan Johnson – but the match came down to mistakes.

“[Bailey] had plenty of solo blocks,” Garrepy said. “She got her hands on just about everything and that’s a lot to ask from somebody that doesn’t have a lot of experience. I’m really pleased with the way we got our hands on the ball and shut [De Los Santos and Johnson] down.”

Classical made fewer mistakes and the Purple took advantage of dozens of North Kingstown miscues to earn the hard-fought victory.

“I think we had too many offensive mental errors and that probably attributed to a lot of points lost,” Garrapy said.

First-year setter Jessica Ho amassed 31 assists for Classical. Johnson (11 kills, 9 digs, 8 aces, 3 blocks) and De Los Santos (8 kills, 2 blocks, 3 digs) were her favorite targets.

“[Johnson’s] defense, her coverage, her hitting ability, and her serves are exceptional,” Gee said. “She did a really good job today. Jhokania played really well too.”

North Kingstown dominated the first set, and led 17-12 in the second stanza until Classical called a timeout, regrouped, and scored eight of the next nine points to take a 20-18 lead. Johnson served up three aces in a row during the run.

The Skippers battled back to tie the score, 23-23, but a serving error, followed by a Johnson kill sealed the game for Classical.

There were 10 ties and three lead changes in the third set but Classical escaped with the win on an Ashley Milan serve.

The final set was even closer. It featured 14 ties.

Classical, which combined for eight serving errors in the previous three sets, didn’t have any in the final chapter. North Kingstown, meanwhile, had 17 unforced errors in the set.

“It’s only the third game of the season,” Garrepy said. “We are going to get better. We are going to get healthier. This was the best match we had but for the first time this season we didn’t execute offensively and that hasn’t been an issue for us.”

Classical won the Division I-North title last season but was upset by South Kingstown in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.

The Barrington High School home football game against Tolman High has been resceduled from 7 o'clock tonight to tomorrow at 2 p.m.

The school district's Web site mentions information from the state Department of Health, which was released yesterday, that a nearby mosquito pool had tested positive for West Nile virus.

The sample was from an area "in close proximity to the campus of Barrington High School," the district's message says. "Furthermore, it has been ascertained that the infected mosquitoes are of a species that bite both birds and humans, increasing the risk of West Nile Virus transmission to humans."

As a result, DEM urged that any outdoor activities held at dusk -- when the bugs are most active -- be rescheduled to a time during the day.

The following release was sent out today regarding Kevin Love and Maya Moore being named the Gatorade High School Athletes of the Year:

LOS ANGELES (July 11, 2007) – The biggest names in high school and professional sports convened in Hollywood today as Gatorade honored the top prep male and female athletes with the fifth annual Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year awards. Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year Kevin Love (Lake Oswego High School / Lake Oswego) was named Gatorade High School Male Athlete of the Year, while Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year Maya Moore (Collins Hill High School / Suwanee) received Gatorade High School Female Athlete of the Year honors.

Love and Moore received their awards at a luncheon emceed by ESPN’s Stuart Scott and attended by former Gatorade award winners Vince Carter of the New Jersey Nets (1993-94 Gatorade National Basketball Player of the Year), Greg Oden of the Portland Trailblazers (2004-05, 2005-06 Gatorade National Basketball Player of the Year & 2006 Gatorade Athlete of the Year), Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets (2002-03 Gatorade North Carolina Boys Basketball Player of the Year), and Lisa Leslie of the Los Angeles Sparks (1995-96 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year).

Introduced in 1985, the Gatorade Player of the Year award was one of the first national awards to honor high school athletes for their athletic excellence, academic achievement and exceptional character. In 2003, the Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year awards were established to identify and honor the nation’s top overall male and female high school athlete from among the 10 Gatorade National Players of the Year honored during the high school athletic season.

All Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year nominees will walk the ESPY red carpet and be featured as special guests during The ESPY Awards Show. The show will take place this evening and air on ESPN on Sunday, July 15, at 9:00 p.m. EDT.

"The ESPY Awards honor the best in sports, so it is only fitting that we celebrate the best in high school sports on the same day," said Jeff Urban, Gatorade senior vice president of sports marketing. “The Gatorade Player of the Year award has built an incredible legacy in its 22 years. The Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year awards have built on to that legacy, helping to increase the prestige of the program, and achieve a reputation among young athletes as the premier honor in high school sports.”
