After knocking off one of the Southeastern Conference's top teams, the Providence Friars may be playing for a spot in the top 25 on Sunday in San Juan. PC will face Miami in the finals of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at 7:30 p.m.
The Friars withstood some heavy pressure and a slew of athletic, big bodies in beating the Arkansas Razorbacks Friday night, 67-51. PC beat Arkansas off the boards, 34-33, and its assortment of changing defenses baffled the 18th ranked Razorbacks and forced a mind-boggling 32 turnovers.
"This is big," said PC's Dwain Williams. "It's a great start to our season. We knew we could face Arkansas here and to knock them off is a big win. It'll help us all year."
Although Arkansas certainly has a lot of work to live up to its pre-season billing, knocking off a good SEC team will help PC's resume all season long. It is reminiscent of an upset win over a Deron Williams-Dee Brown Illinois team in 2003 that helped push the Friars to the NCAA Tournament.
WoW!!!
Have a great season Friars and Coach Welch!
