PC's three fall recruits are keeping busy.
Corey Lowe and his undefeated Newton North (Mass.) High team will play at New Bedford this Sunday. The game could pose one of the stiffest tests of the regular season for Newton. Newton beat N.Bedford in last year's state tournament. The Whalers are led by another Div. I guard in Brian Rudolph.
Brian McKenzie is off to a fine start at Xaverian High in Brooklyn but the team is not a candidate to repeat as Catholic League and city champions.
Finally, Baltimore guard Jamal Barney is off to a superb start, averaging nearly 24 points and 9 rebounds a game. He may be the city's top guard prospect.
PC has three available scholarships to use on players in the spring. Count on Tim Welsh awarding at least two of those scholarships.

They sound like good players, but with our recent history, how long can we expect these guys to stay around. The kids we get all have big expectations that are difficult to meet. After their heads have been filled with talk about how good they are and that they should be in the NBA. I am really down on the type of players we are recruiting and getting. Sorry to be so pessimistic. Jim

I'm not a big fan of Welsh's recruiting at all. We play in the Big East, not the Atlantic 10. Growing up watching the teams of the mid 80's through the 90's one thing teams could count on when they played Providence was a rough, physical game. Big East play is physical and Welsh does not seem to understand that. Besides the fact many players exit our program as fast as they come in, Welsh seems to recruit players that primarily are combo guards and three's. He needs to get tougher and bring in those bangers and stop recruiting smallish combo's hoping one will stick. Get the size, everyyear is the same, "Providence is bringing in another guard."

Tim Welsh is a "B" coach.

Sorry. I felt this way for a few yeras now.Thats why he's stll here! If he was any good, he'd be gone, just like all the other good coaches we've had.

We need a coach who will come into town with no expectation of using PC as a career move, but possesses the earnest desire to bring back PC to its past success.

Sorry. Tim Welsh isnt that man.

Coach Welsh:
Not to worry. There will be opennings in the Patriot League.

Friar fans let's get out of this rutand hire a coach who can make us competitive every year...not every 3 or 4 years. I'm sure former Uconn assistant Karl Hobbs would like a Big East position!

Tim Welsh isn't the problem. The Big East is. Pc is now too small a school to play in this league. Look at Louisville losing to St Johns as how you can't take anybody for granted. I would rather see PC in another league winning 20 games and going to the NCAAs over being a doormat which is the future of the program.Looks like PC fans sghould go see the Hockey team untikll they do. this is no surprise if you think honestly about it.

Hey lets dump Welch when his contract is up and go after Tom Penders who still has a lot of friends around here from his URI days.....I think Tom would stick around in the newer tougher big east and could well bring PC back
