Songs about flowers trigger memories

Apple blossoms

My automatic sprinkler was turned on this week. I was away from home for 10 days and came back to Tulips, almost in full bloom. The gentleman from Yardwork said “ We’re having May weather in April .” He was right.

The apple blossoms in my backyard are also in full bloom. Since then the music of “I’ll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time….. One day in May I’ll Come And Stay/ Happy Surprise That The Sumshine On Today…” has been ringing in my ear. It is still April, but it feels like May.

Then I started to wonder… do other people think of songs about flowers the way I often do, not just flowers in general ( i.e. You Don’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore ), but specific flowers?

I think of Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White, The Rose ( Bette Midler ), To Each His Own ( which starts with “A rose must remain with the sun and the rain..” )

Daisy, Daisy ; On The Street Where You Live ( Lilac ) and of course Tiptoe Thru The Tulips.

“I’ll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time” – the Andrew Sisters’ version has to be my favorite.

So – what’s your favorite flower song?

A friend of mine from Bloomington,IN wrote..

Another friend who grew up in the Smithfield area wrote,

"Since I grew up on an apple orchard, mine is "I'll be with you in apple blossom time"

Well, last night another song popped into my consciousness. I'm sure it must be on the top of the list for many people - about any flowers. Nat King Cole made it famous, and it's also sung by Doris Day in the 1950 film "Man With A Horn". It was written by Ray Noble in 1934. The title is "The Very Thought Of You".

This is the chorus -

The mere idea of you, the longing here for you

I love that song, too. The version I remember was by Trini Lopez, though, and my dad and I used to dance and sing it together.

Another favorite of mine, also made famous by Nat King Cole, was 'Ramblin' Rose'. I still can't listen to it without tearing up. My Grampa used to play it on his console stereo record player at his house in Oakland Beach and we'd sing it together. It always stops me in my tracks...

You brought back some beautiful memories of my grandmother, who brought me up, with To Each His Own. That was her favorite and had very meaningful lyrics. I love your pictures - they are gorgeous!

It's not really a flower song per se, but one of the loveliest love songs ("On the Street Where You Live" from "My Fair Lady") mentions my favorite blossoming shrub, the lilac.

"Are their lilac trees in the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour out of every door?
No, it's just on the street where you live."
