Spring is here: First crocus blooms

cro-3.jpg

Spring will not arrive for two more weeks by the calendar; but spring is here, according to the crocus, one of the first flowers to bloom in spring.

I have just spotted my first two crocuses, in bloom.

Crocus belong in the Iris family (Iridaceae). They typically have 3 stamens.

Crocus is a Greek word, krokos.

Crocus symbolizes “Youthful Gladness, Attachment and Cheerfulness,” according to the Flower meaning site.

Thanks for the nice shot of the crocus bloom. Spring flowering bulbs are something I miss, being down here in Florida.

Rees, I used to have spring-ish bulbs popping up in California, would they not do well in Florida? Some sort of wild hyacinth, and a kind of wild onion that had pretty little white flowers and colonized like crazy. Soon after, daffodils. I think you have to pick daffodils (or narcissus?) that tolerate warm winters, though.

Hi Karen Anne, I think crocus would do well here for the first year but I bet the bulbs would rot with the high humidity and the frequent rains. The sandy soil (it really is just sand here) would probably be a problem. I bet in the northern areas of the state they would work fine but I'm in the southern end. I've tried daffodils and they didn't make it. There are a few native bulbs here but the flowers are very simple....Oh well at least I have your photos.
