Statewide Garden Tour this weekend

Jackie and Wayne McCarthy of North Kingstown have one of the largest, certainly the tallest, water gardens in the state. Their creation, next to their bed and breakfast, is one of 34 gardens on this weekend's Gardening with the Masters Garden Tour.
Every two years, the URI Master Gardeners put on a statewide garden tour and this year’s version, featuring more than 30 gardens statewide, will be held July 14 and 15.
The tour features gardens owned and prepared by Master Gardeners. Each garden on the tour differs in theme and size. Some are large tracts and others are small cottage-style plots.
And tickets are still available.
For weeks now, Master Gardeners have been primping their landscapes for the tour. While most garden tours are already history this year, the Master Gardeners hold theirs in July because most gardens do not come into their own until this time of year.
As in the past, a single ticket allows purchasers to visit all of the gardens and gives them two days to do the feat. The tickets, $15 a person, are actually guidebooks that contain a description of each garden and directions to each site.
At each garden, visitors will be greeted by the owner and Master Gardener docents who will provide printed material about the plants and techniques used to make the garden attractive.
The vast majority of the gardens on the tour are privately owned. There are a few gardens that are also open to the public year-round—new to the tour this year is the colonial garden at Prescott Farm in Middletown.
The gardens will be open for visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Tickets are available at Lincoln Gardens, 1688 Louisquisett Pike, Lincoln; Jacavone Garden Center, 1461 Atwood Ave., Johnston; Clarke Flowers, 398 Hope St., Providence; Choppy’s Garden and Nursery Inc.,379 Market St., Warren; Schartner Farms, South County Trail, Exeter; The Farmer’s Daughter, Route 138, South Kingstown; Highland Farm, Tower Hill Road, Wakefield; Chaves’ Gardens Inc.,,935 East Main Road, Middletown; URI CELS Outreach Center, 3 East Alumni Avenue Kingston (874-2900) and on July 14 only at the Master Gardener Field House, East Farm, Route 108, Kingston.
All proceeds are used to support URI Master Gardener educational programs.
