Weekend plant sales: There's always room for one more
Everyone likes to try something new. A new plant is usually cheaper than a new tool or pair of shoes, and it doesn't clutter up the closet.
Wouldn't you know, a few local organizations are planning plant sales this weekend. Some of them feature some plants you don't usually see at garden centers, and offer the chance to talk to people who raised them.
(Not that there's anything wrong with garden centers.)
These events attract passionate gardeners, and, quantities of plants are limited, so go early to get the widest selection.
On Saturday and Sunday, Ledge Ends Produce, in East Greenwich, is selling certified organic vegetable seedlings, fertilizer and compost at Briggs-Boesch Farm from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. They can also answer questions.
Also on Saturday and Sunday, Southside Community Land Trust in Providence holds its Rare and Unusual Plant Sale, with "organically farmed" vegetable, ornamental and herb plants for sale from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. SCLT members can get in at 9 on Saturday.
If you're feeling overwhelmed by choice these days, the Rhode Island Dahlia Society Tuber Auction and Plant Sale in Wickford on Sunday could be just the thing. (And it makes for great watercooler conversation: "What did you do this weekend, Bob?" "Oh, met some friends for coffee, went to the tuber auction. The usual.")
But seriously folks. The dahlias are American Dahlia Society-recognized show winners. The auction starts at 1 p.m. at the Cold Spring Community Center on Beach Street.
