Hot Wieners

December 21, 2007

Make your own hot wieners

Recently Greg Stevens of Olneyville R.I. System Wieners shared a recipe for making them at home. Here’s the recipe and all the sources for the secret Spice Mix and the wieners.

OLNEYVILLE RI SYSTEM WIENER SAUCE

1 lb. ground beef (80 percent or less)
1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup shortening
2 tablespoons Spice Mix (see note)

Melt shortening in 2 quart saucepan. Brown onions. Stir in spices. Crumble beef into mixture. Simmer, covered, for one hour. Stir occasionally.

Notes: If you want the wieners they use, visit the Rhode Island Provision retail store on Day St. in Johnston.
The ingredients of the mix consists of a blend of primarily chili powder, garlic powder numerous other spices that are a family secret.
