| Backseat Driver: Will 'Carbon Footprints' catch on here? »
Derek James is taking just one of his two 1988 Chevy Caprice cars to the 14th annual Woodward Dream Cruise classic-car show outside Detroit this week. Like many car enthusiasts, the 25-year-old Pontiac, Mich., resident has put a big engine into his car. This year, he added a smaller carburetor and an extra gear to save fuel. He also cut back on the cruising that's a big part of car shows because of gas prices near $4 a gallon. "You don't see as many cars out as you used to," James said. "I don't even take mine out as much as I used to." Classic-car shows across the USA are still attracting crowds similar or just a bit smaller than previous years this summer, according to USA Today. Dream Cruise spokesman Don Tanner says the event is expected to draw more than 40,000 cars and 1 million spectators Saturday, about the same as last year. |
