Cox, Verizon considering changes in Internet policies

Local Internet providers Verizon Communications and Cox Communications are considering major changes in their broadband policies regarding video downloads.

The Wall Street Journal reported today that Verizon may eventually charge its Internet subscribers based on the amount of data downloaded per month.

Cox is also contemplating a controversial change: It says it has not ruled out slowing downloads of video and other large files through so-called peer-to-peer network and speeding the downloading of other content.

"We reserve the right to manage traffic on our network but we don't get into the specific methodologies that we use," David Grabert, a Cox spokesman, told The Wall Street Journal. "You have to manage traffic on the network and prioritize certain types of traffic -- like phone traffic - over other types of traffic."
